Sure, go ahead and make a trailer. I'd like to see it myself.
(I don't know what footage you'll use for the trailer though since gameplay is minimalistic.)

That's not what minimalistic means, but we have basically nothing that would actually constitute a game besides sprites, some character development, and some level design.

I'm sorry that I have to resort to crappy phone pics, but I don't have access to anything else. (Which is why I'm not in steam chat.)
...and I won't have access for pretty much the rest of summer which sucks because I was going to get a lot of spritework done.
Anyways, I'm working on securing a programmer from MFGG at the moment, so there might be actual gameplay by the end of summer. (Although, I think using the newest Hello engine for a base is a good idea.)
Also the project is also headed for a name change from If Only Super Mario Bros 4 to the much simpler name, Jumpman. Which is Mario's original name.
Old on top, new on bottom.
Tell me if you like the old one better. (I'll fix the arm position to the new one of course.) (Or, I could raise Mario some all together so that his arm rests on top of the text rather than hanging in front of it.)

I think the logo looks pretty good. The name seems like it should be a little bit longer/more specific, so that people will understand that you're not talking about Mario's original name.

Well, Jumpman is nearly never going to be confused with Mario's actual name. Nintendo hasn't slapped that name on him in over 30 years.MagicPillow wrote:The name seems like it should be a little bit longer/more specific, so that people will understand that you're not talking about Mario's original name.
Even trivia-obsessive like we (yes, it's proper English) don't call Mario 'Jumpman', nor associate the name heavily with Mario's identity. It's just a piece of trivia, and I think it's a pretty great title to sum up the game as: Super Mario.
The name might be extended another day to 'Project Jumpman' or 'Super Jumpman', but I'd rather wait until later in actual development before seeing if it needs a longer name.
Or, I'll end up just polling for it.
The other alternative names are:
Super Mario Dream (plot-related)
Super Mario Magic (theme-related)
Super Mario Limbo (plot-related)
Super Mario Carnival (theme-related)
Super Mario Story (story is a major focus of the game)
SML4/SMB5/SMW3: Hat Trick
SML4/SMB5/SMW3: Caprio's Hour
It's Mr. Video Himself! (Mario's original original name, in a 1920's title vibe)
(The game is taking shape into a mostly 1920's theme, but I haven't really shown much of it besides the new logo stuff. The main villain is a magician as well, so magic tricks and cards and carnivals will be heavily present.)

"I wanted to become a hero but i ironically ended up becoming a jumpman"(all written in japanese) (a bad joke/reference of the long title of some japanese games/manga)

Drew this two nights ago.
There's a logo for each chapter/character because it's fun to design these.
(Also: put the Jumpman text where the block is; drawing the text takes a lot of work.)
Poses for Peach and Toad welcome since I can't seem to come up with anything good for them.
(No, I'm not using the 3D World player icons.)

Nintendo owns the rights of that name, probably to prevent people from actually naming their fan-games like that.Julien12150 wrote:why not simply named 'super mario bros 4'
Also, IC, you could name it Super Mario Universe, i don't know if it actually fits the theme.
Maybe "Mario Super Adventure" or "Mario Super World", it's a little change to the title but it has some impact, i guess.

Agree with hans for Super Mario Universe , cause the game was made of things here and here all around this good old universe the brothers have .

He's stubborn with the name Jump man at this point, especially since he's got a bit of support from some people. I think it's best to just figure out some under-the-main-title text for any extra clarification.

I suggest jumping man
Also I'm pretty sure super Mario story was the Japanese name for super paper Mario sooo I don't think it'd turn out too great

You are correct.Squidish wrote: Also I'm pretty sure super Mario story was the Japanese name for super paper Mario sooo I don't think it'd turn out too great
Also: SMW is called Super Mario Bros 4: SMW in japan as well which was one of the original complications of the name ioSMB4.
...
However: Why do Japanese names for games matter when everything is in English?
Will there really be any confusion?
And, on a more important note:
The first reason why the name changed to 'Jumpman' is because no other project has had such a name. Sometimes, being recognized is more important than something that sounds cool or like a true follow-up.
The second reason why I changed the name is because of the importance of the story aspect in the game. It's slowly evolving into a Super Paper Mario -type complexity, and no other SMB game has had any story beyond a few lines of text or a few pictures.
The third reason why the name was changed is the same reason why Super Mario Universe was suggested: it embellishes everything Mario is, and so what better way to do that than to name the project, 'Jumpman'? It's the equivalent of naming it 'Super Mario', while making a neat reference and distinguishing itself- by name- from every other fangame project out there.

I fail to see how being called jump man relates to everything about the franchise, when I think of a Mario game being called jump man I think of donkey kong more than anything.
I think a name like Super Mario Universe is a brilliant name, seeing as it connects to what you're going for here, everything established in the Mario universe in a single title. I know there's other games being called this but I think you should aim to get a name as clever as this one.
Jumpman just sounds to vague and weird. it's kinda like calling a Sonic fan game Mr Needlemouse.

Alright so this was a misunderstanding on my end, you're only going to be using Jump man as a code name?imaginary cake wrote:...which is exactly what Sonic 4 was being called in development.renhoek wrote: Jumpman just sounds to vague and weird. it's kinda like calling a Sonic fan game Mr Needlemouse.
If so then I'm sorry about the hassle.

Well, it'll be called Jumpman in the meantime until I believe the game is more deserving of another title. (When it's further in development.)
Even then, I'll probably just replace the text under the logo when it comes time to do so... unless I revert back to ioSMB4, where I think the logo is pretty set.

decided to update these since it's been awhile since I actually sprited these or anything for that matter.
colored versions are music blocks, not note blocks. aka super mario maker material
oh and the up-side-down versions are where the notes are at the bottom of the stage or something, like how actual music is displayed line-by-line
(the stem of the note will always face the top line of the music bars I think)
(not everything will make it into the game, but I like to sprite recolors and edit more than I like actually spriting from scratch.)
edit:

emotionless veggies because I haven't bothered with faces yet

(I haven't sprited it in over a year, but it really needed updating on it's walk cycle.)

I came here worried that Defiant was criticizing me again.
But yeah, feel free to suggest anything!
Edit: Thanks, Turret, for pointing that out because I've been spelling it with an extra 'u" all my life. No one else has showed me that until now. (Not even autocorrect.)

Well then, today might as well be considered the first "serious" day of development.
We've had 3 MFGG users- a programmer, a spriter, and a musician- each join our Skype group to discuss the development of the game.
They're all interested and talented, and I've begun to present literally everything I've recorded on the project to them. 200 pages in a binder, with batches scanned here and there every few nights. We got to page 27 tonight. (Although, that's because the first few dozen pages don't really have that much content.)
...and no, I don't intend to release those pages to this thread quite yet. There's a lot of embarrassing, scraped concepts that I had difficulty presenting to even the team we now. It actually kind of serves as a "what not to do" list.
So, things are now wildly picking up again. I'm excited.

Today on Cake Returns to Spriting, he animates the classic Koopa shell!
Drafts:

I may or may not add in holes for the arms/legs, but I think this looks good on its own.
Which probably means I'll never revisit this sprite again, do recolors, or post the spritesheet.
Edit: I guess I am finishing this the right way.
