After reading a contest topic on TSR's forums (this one to be exact), I thought it was a cool idea and wanted to see this community's skills at this same idea. So come show off your skills with this fun contest! (credit goes to The Spriter's Resource for this idea)
The basics are simple:
1) Go to this link and generate a random game name
2) Make a title screen for it. Dimensions have to be 240x160 px or smaller.
3) Deadline for submissions is Oct. 27, so you have about a week.
There's no prize so far for winning, this is all for fun. Though some have suggested making the winning entry into an actual game, but we'll decide that down the line.
As for judging, I'll be doing that. I also want 2 others to volunteer to judge. If you want to judge, you cannot participate in the main contest, so think what you wanna do first.
Also a few more things:
-If you don't like a game name you generate, feel free to re-generate. But don't do it too much just so you can find a good name
-Try keeping your game name secret. If you absolutely have to say it, use the spoiler tags to hide it like this
-Because it was done on TSR's thread, I'mma say it here: Don't just post because you generated a funny name and want to say it. Use the chat room if you have to.
Have fun with this and let's see what you can do! (Also Saso and/or Maurice: if you consider this a forum game feel free to close the thread.)
Saso said in another thread that is a 'forum game' is actually producing interesting content then it will not be closed.
And hey, that was in the 'Stabyourself films' topic, this topic is clearly going to produce much better content.
Also, I'd like to be a judge, as I'd have no hope trying to compete with some of the spriters on this forum.
I rolled an awesome one, I'm definitely in with this one.
But how are the images judged, if I might ask?
Just looks, creativity, design, use of color, humor or the actual potential of a decent game it might become?
I was just curious.
I volunteer as my spriting needs much improvement and I bealive I am qualified, as long as I get the guidelines on what to judge on.(Creativity, Quality, what Jorichi said)
For the Judging, categories are: Design, creativity, color usage, and "does it look fun". A fifth category would be included if someone suggests a good one.
(admittedly I was just gonna have it as "Which looks best". Didn't really evaluate.)
And for those looking to be a judge: I encourage you to give this a shot anyway as this can also be used as an exercise to improve your spriting ability. Since I'm a judge and made the thread I naturally can't enter myself, but I'm still creating one and plan on posting it anyway. It won't be entered but I could possibly get critique and stuff for it, so it would help improve my abilities.
If I'm a judge I can do the contest, it just wouln't count. I would probably do that.
Also you should have a contest signup sheet so you know who's going to do it.
Bonko wrote:Also you should have a contest signup sheet so you know who's going to do it.
What I'm actually gonna do is list the entrants with a link to their entry after they post it. People could say "Ohey I'mma join!" and end up not posting anything ever. It's easier to count how many people posted submissions IMO. I'll also put the list of judges when I decide who's gonna be the judges.

Well, I don't think I'll be doing "Jackie Chan's Sex Simulator", but I think I might give this a shot. Also, I think that the "use of color" category should be replaced with something along the lines of visual appeal/aesthetics. Color seems too specific. Someone could make an excellent-looking title screen entirely in black and white, perhaps for the Game Boy.
"Plunger of the Damned"
"Human by day, Soul of the Damned by night. After being cursed by a plunger bought from a voodoo shop, Aaron must find a way to defeat the evil Count Toileticus from taking over the world, while controlling the evil spririt now inside of him."
---------------------------------------------------------------
This is an example of how you should post your title screens once you finish. Give the name, the image, and if possible, a made-up explanation of the games story or concept. A good explanation can compliment the title screen. (And yes I could do better, and I will touch this screen up. I just wanted to give a good example post for right now.)
well instead of editing the post (I realize no one will see it if I edit the post)
I present Deep Space Chocobo.
I forgot to put the edition part in but I know nobody gives a sh*t (if other wise tell me.)
EDIT: I've noticed that that people are giving summary's of their games so here's mine,
you play a chocobo who's grown tired of it's current life on it's home planet so it decides to fly into outer space to find another planet, you need to avoid asteroids, space ships and even contracts that will sign you up for final fantasy XVII 13, you know you've reached the end of a level once you're near a planet.

"Explosive Pogo Knights!"
"What's more fun than hopping around on a pogo stick in a suit of armor filled to the brim with unstable explosives?
Brainwash you enemy as you make your army hop towards their destination, or... detonation. Blow everything up in your path
and spam your enemy with lifeless bodyparts!"
Personally, I think a good category is how much you'd want to play the game if you saw the title screen. Jorichi is currently winning that one by a mile.
Jamaican Ping Pong 95
Hazardous Wagon with Friends
Sonic's Barbarian - The Dark Project
German Llama of Love
Educational Mushroom Punch-Out!!
American Equestrian rage
Intense Drug-Dealing Brothers
German Bubble 2K
Legend of Godzilla Restaurant
Dead or Alive Spelling Demolition
THE SECRET WEAPON OF THE MATH RAGE
"Need help with math, or just really good? Either way, you'll love this game! Throw numbers at objects with +s, -s, ×s, ÷s, or =s on them to change your score by that number! Watch out for fractions, negative numbers, and other dangerous things along the way!"
----
I know I could have done better on the title screen (probably make it bigger =P) but whatever the new concept is good], two.
EDIT: nobody has commented on mine yet [foreveralone.why]
EDIT2: Changed storything. [storyisnow.new]

Mine is pretty bad but I will give it a try anyway.
Professional Penguin II (2)
"There once was a penguin named Gary, after a life of being a criminal he had just came out of prison. Life in Antarctica was rough and the government was corrupted. He wanted to change they way life was for an ordinary penguin, so he decided he was going to do something about it, the only way he knew how... WITH GUNS!"
Edit: I have changed the picture to what I think suited it. A Grand Theft Auto box art style.

Pretty awesome entries guys. :D
For those who are saying "I could've done better", remember that the deadline is Saturday. That means you have all that time to polish and refine what you have. You already showed your work so you're good and everything, but if you think you can do better visit your entry down the line again and just give it a few touch up and update your posts with it. It's not the final version until the deadline.

Mac is not an excuse. Photoshop is available on Mac, and if you don't have the money or don't feel like being a pirate, so is Gimp.
I'm on Mac myself and made my example entry just fine on it.
EDIT: Also, I will have the judges chosen by tomorrow.

Meaning, I'm not on my computer, without a proper mouse, making it very hard.
Decades after the death of Neo, The Chosen One must rise again to take on the might of the machines using the only power they can never posses... love.
I did begin work on another game title, but I was finding it very difficult to come up with ideas. You can see it here: http://i.imgur.com/QHzKv.png
Angry Golf Kids
"WHO TOOK MY FLAG?!?!" How are you surpost to know where to aim now? Use your club to find the answers in this violent side scrolling beat 'em up.
I'd play this...
The judges will be Camewel and Bonko. And myself of course. Just thought I'd let you know.
Also, just so I can update the OP, are people still interested in turning the winning entry into an actual game, or should there just be no prize other than bragging rights?

I think people should only be allowed to be a judge once they submit art so they have proof that they'll know what to do when judging.
also I think the winning one should be turned into a game but it'll need to be short.

I kind of agree, though some people who applied to be a judge aren't able to make entries, and seeing as there's only about 2 days left, I don't think they'd be able to make an entry in time. (Ex. LightningFire)
Camewel's a good pick for a judge because he's made a few games already (albeit they were scrapped ideas later), so he knows what looks fun and stuff.
Bonko was chosen because Thunderflipper and LF were the only others who applied, and from what I've seen TF is making an entry (I think) and LF hasn't been around enough recently (again, I think.) So it's kinda order of elimination.
INTERNET ROBOT EXHIBITION!
After the robots came out of the internet, you must fight them to the death!
Each robot has their own special ability to learn to defeat!
And don't forget the achievements!
EDIT: Gave the guy hair.

LightningFire wrote:@idiot9.0 I'm actually just lurking the forums, but I post once in a while. Also, even if I'm not a judge, can I still give opinions on entries?
I think I'll just let you be a judge. You're pretty trustworthy and knowing and stuff. Four judges isn't that bad anyway.
Plunger of the Damned: Not bad. This could make for a very interesting platformer.
Deep Space Chocobo: I'm sorry but, what would be the point of this game?
Explosive Pogo Knights: Awesome sprite and awesome summary, but there's one problem. I don't see what you could do in a game like that. And even if you did find something to do in it, it will most probably end up turning into a bomberman clone.
The Secret Weapon of the Math Rage: See Deep Space Chocobo.
Professional Penguin II: Although this game looks fun to play, the name doesn't really say that it should be a shooting game.
Neo Ghost of Love: Again, see Deep Space Chocobo.
Angry Golf Kidz: Even if the sprite is too simple, it seems like a fun game to play.
Internet Robot Exhibition: I don't really think it will be good enough to be a game, mostly because of the summary.
Now, if I had to pick the best, it would be Plunger of the Damned.
And the worst would be Deep Space Chocobo.

EXCUSE ME, but this is a SPRITING contest, not a GAME IDEA contest. now JUDGE THEM BY THEIR PICTURES.
also, if you can't see what the pogo game was about and think it was a BOMBERMAN CLONE, then you need to sit in the corner.

wait does that mean secret weapon of math rage and neo ghost of love (can't sleep after seeing the image :L) fall into the worst ones as well, because you gave them the same reason as deep space choco.
also it looked like you were judging by the concept of a game which is kinda un fair as no one really had a choice in the titles of their games.
although idiot didn't really state how to judge so I can't blame you if you got confused.
renhoek, both of those games have a creative sprite, compared to yours.
I'm judging both the sprite and the game. If I didn't say anything about the sprite, it's normal for me. And if I should be judging only the sprites, then I'm sorry. If you want, I can stop judging. I'm not that good at it anyways.
