I was planning on doing it at my own pace. But I've noticed I'm more eager to draw than to actually do something else lately.

Not really sure what you mean by "A stroke would help". I do however think they "blend in with the background" to a certain extent.
An idea that passed my mind was to give the characters a small black (or dark gray) border around their outlines (like Paper Mario, just less thick of a line).

I really could use some help with the designing of characters, so help is really welcome. But I might be a bit nit-picky on that, however suggestions never seize to inspire me.
