Why?
I mean Pinkie Pie doesn't have a pink pie on her flank, it's balloons.
Rainbow Dash has a thundercloud (yes, it's rainbow colored I'll give you that.).
Rarity has diamonds or some other gem.
Mayor Mare doesn't have a mayor, a mare or any combination of the two as a cutie mark.
Macintosh has an apple (Yes I get the reference).
And not to forget Derpy/Ditzy who has bubbles as a cutie mark.
None of them are literal. But they do reflect to their names or personal qualities in one way or another.

But I would be happy to change the cutie mark of my OC to something more relative to his ability or name. I would challenge you to think of a better one.
For now, it fits his abilities a bit.

The majority of names is made up by the community though, I guess that's why it seems that way.
The main ponies have a faint reflection of their ability, character, name or lifestyle.

As for Zecora's thing, I have no clue. It's possible that Zebra's have some sort of Cutie Marks too (heck, what isn't possible in that world?).
It hasn't really been explained in the show for as far as I can recall it. But I like to see it as some sort of Cutie Mark-ish thing.
Besides, Zebra's are close relatives of horses...

I did some research. Zebras are a relative of horses.
So are mules, donkeys, rhinoceroses, and tapirs.
Plus the extinct species, Brontotheres, which are these weird rhino things:

That doesn't make any sense. Her name is still Derpy, they never said they changed it.

To clear things up here:
The original name of the pony we refer to as 'Derpy' was originally going to be called Ditzy Doo.
However, the feedback from the community was so overwhelming and enthusiastic that Hasbro decided to give her the name the community gave her as a background pony, Derpy Hooves. Hasbro really liked the name and wanted to show the community that they cared. So she was called Derpy.
When the episode aired where Rainbow Dash calls her Derpy, they had to pull the name, the crossed eyes and the exaggerated voice, as some complaints about them were made.
She hasn't really been renamed ever since, they just left that part out.
The community will most likely keep calling her Derpy (I personally do that as I find it much cuter). But some might call her Ditzy.
It has been confirmed that she will keep appearing as a background pony, if not speak some small lines again (I really like this, it gives you the feel that ponyville is a small and warm community).

However, I think the name Ditzy rubbed off on what the community thinks is her sister.
I must say, everything involving background ponies is usually made up by the community (their names, personality, interests, etc.).
So really, Derpy's sister might not be called 'Ditzy', nor might she even be her sister...
You won't ever be sure until they go canon. The name 'Ditzy' is just a drifting name at the moment.

The oddest thing is that no complaints were filed against 'Screwball' in the Daring Doo episode... (if I'm not mistaking).
