Stabyourself Spriting Contest 4: Classical Remakings
This time around you'll be making new title screens for already existing games. You, the contestants, will be choosing a game of your choice. The games have to be either off of a NES, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Gameboy (original or color), or a PC game that's either Retro-styled or of the 2D variety
The catch is: You have to remake it for a console other than what it was originally on, as well as make it look completely different.
So, to give an example: I, a contestant, will choose Pokemon Red. This was on the Game Boy. This means I have to make a new title screen for Pokemon Red, but have to make it look like it was on either a NES or a Super Nintendo, or possibly even Genesis. But I also have to make it look different, so instead of just Red and different Pokemon standing on a blank screen, I make it look like Red and Pikachu are running through a field all dynamic-like, with fancy hills and Pokemon in the background.
So some basic rules:
Judging will be based on Design, Creativity, and Proper Palette Usage. All scores are out of 10, for a total of 30.
The prize will be a sprite of either your OC or a character of your choosing for use as an avatar. It will be modeled after a trophy, so 1st gets an OC in Gold, Second in Silver, Third Bronze.
If anyone wants to give anything additional for a prize please contact me via PM and I'll update this post with it.
The entry period for submissions will be open until Midnight July 29th. I will announce the winners a few days later, giving me time to make the prizes as well.
Anyway have fun and good luck. Hope to see some cool stuff from you guys. If you have any questions feel free to post them.

So some basic rules:
I'll be judging once again since I'm hosting this round. I will not be finding any other judges for the time being. I want to encourage anyone who's even attempted spriting to enter. If I feel it's too much for only one judge I will post about it but for now don't bother asking to be one. Enter the contest instead.1) Choose a game from one of these consoles: NES, SNES, Sega Genisis, Gameboy, or a PC game described in rule 2.
2) For PC games it has to be Retro-styled or 2D. Binding of Isaac or Cave Story are good ideas.
2a) You are not allowed to do Mari0 or any other Stabyourself game, no exceptions.
3) Make the title screen for a system it wasn't originally on. So if you picked Megaman 2 for the NES, make it look like it was on SNES.
3a.) You cannot choose to remake a title for PC as it has limitless possibilities and thus would be unfair. It must be remade on one of the consoles.
4) Make a brand new title screen. Don't just copy the old screen and "adjust" colors for a different palette. Be original and creative.
5) Follow the color palette for the system you are making the new screen for. You are not required to follow the system's color limitations.
(Ex: NES only allowing 3 + transparency per 8x8 tile) You just need to follow the palette for the system you choose.
I'll link them if needed but honestly a quick google search will provide results for the palette you need.
6) The only form of copy-pasting I will allow is the game's logo if it is absolutely needed. If you can make something new, DO IT.
If the PC game options become too much hassle I'll remove it and keep only consoles.

NES POKEMON GOLD:

I was planning on doing Pokemon Silver as well even if I can't enter two cos it feel kinda wrong to do one Pokemon title but not it's counterpart BUT GODDAMN Ho-oh's feathers was so fucking tedious that I didn't feeling making another. Maybe I'll make the other one later.

Haven't said it here yet but for how quickly you 3 were with these I'm very impressed at the quality of all of them. Hoping to see other great ones too.

I think this doesn't count because it looks like you just copy-pasted logos and sprites.TheBroCount wrote:

Nice, but I don't think it fit the resolution of a NES game.HowToEatGirafes wrote:starbound, the NES Game :

All I said was match the palette, not the resolution.
Also there's two days left so anyone who's thought about entering better hurry up.

Whoops forgot to post the results for this so...
RESULTS!
They were all very great entries but in the end someone has to win. So without further delay here we go.
I found 2 anonymous judges (unless you were in steam chat which then you may know) to help grade, so all points are out of a possible 90.
In 6th place: Saulo with 25 points
Potential was seen here but in the end it was brought down by being a bit too simple, even for a Megaman title screen, as well as not utilizing many more colors that the SNES was capable of providing.
In 5th place, Hugo with 52 points
Some found that the characters were drawn too much like Hugo's style instead of the game style, but it didn't cause any point loss. What did though was again color use for not using how many the SNES was capable of, as well as just being Quote and Curly off a "slightly modified" version of the original screen.
In 4th place, Giraffe with 57 points
Though it was slightly praised that it was an obvious Metroid homage, it was brought down due to lack of scenery. Suggestions to increase it were different star colors, terrain on the main planet, and even planets in the background since you travel to many in the game. However for NES standards it was impressive
in 3rd place, Kiashi with 63 points
It was seen to actually be able to work on an actual NES with sprite workarounds and that helped push it for accuracy. But the only real agreed downside was that there was just a white background, which, even for NES, could still be doable. Ho-oh was designed expertly well though.
In second place, MM102 with 80 points
This is the closest one that almost got a perfect score from one of the judges, only thing that kept it from that was a few small nitpicks such as lack of background activity. Design wise it's amazing and it utilizes tons of SNES colors, including the logo being gold-plate. One judge said it legit looks like the colors came out of a Mario game.
And in first place, Automatik with 81 points!
The main issues with this one are the obvious Isaac with his leg-butt and it looking like the main scene was taken from a poster image, and a few more details could have been in the background. But other than that everything else was spot on. Given 4 colors it is absolutely amazing, plus animated doesn't hurt either.
Well that was really close there at the end huh. But congrats to those who won and thanks for all who participated. It was small but overall still fantastic. To the three winners, I still plan on doing a sprite/avatar of your choosing in a trophy-type thing so if and when you want a character done please PM me what you want me to sprite.

Did you even get permission from idiot to host this time?
How are you going sprite a trophy for the winner without being able to sprite yourself?
Why so many title screens? They are getting old now.
Having a theme of no theme is a bit silly.
What do you mean by choosing other judges for "the time being"? Will they not get to judge the entire thing?
I don't get it.

Yeah, no offense, Girafe, but Idiot should be the one hosting a new round. He's great at handling contests, and it doesn't looks confusing as yours.
Also, like MM102 said, it's not like you can just come here and make a new round.
Also, if you actually had permission, I'd say you'd need to plan this A LOT more. This is all too random.
But, other than that, I'd be up for another spriting contest. Although I didn't win the last one, I was quite happy with how I got my drawing. But I'd want Idiot to host it, though...

I gave him the OK for it since I thought it was a good idea. He did it via PM. He should have mentioned it and given a much better example.
If you guys want me to run it I'll take the round over but I will be using this exact theme. I will refine it but it is an interesting theme, you can't deny.

Eh, I like the idea of "do what your dreaming of", but I don't feel like making title screens anymore.
I would much rather make a character or scenery of some kind instead.
If you choose to keep it a title screen its fine, but I'm probably going to sit out this time around.

I will be participating this time.
And it's pretty obvious what my entry will be if the theme remains.

Why not making a "how this character would look in your dream game" contest?
Like, in that massive mix it's possible to make Stev with NES pokemon games' style or a pokemon with Zelda sprites style, maybe making it bigger, anyways it's just an idea.

Thanks for trying Giraffe but I'm just gonna cancel this thing before it starts. It was a good idea but I thought you would have a much better execution. So yeah.
(There's no way that I can stop you from doing your own contest in a new thread, but for this thread I'm just stopping it here)
For those who are wanting a new sprite contest..... I've got a good idea for a contest that somewhat fits this theme that Giraffe posted, but also won't be just "title screens" again. Stay tuned.
