Description:

Well, since my other mappack (The Gauntlet) is almost complete, and no-one's really taken an interest in it, I thought I'd get started on my next project. I'm calling this one, "We Need To Go Deeper"!

What I want to achieve with each world is to have it at a certain altitude above the Earth's core, going further towards it as the worlds progress.

This will consist of 6 worlds, each containing 3/4 levels, with 1 or 2 sublevels. Each world will have an underlying theme of:
1) Outer Space
2) High Rise Buildings (maybe some smog, and lit-up buildings)
3) Street Level (possibly with an industrial, gritty, dystopian feel)
4) The Mariana Trench (probably have a very plain background, because of so little light)
5) Deep Underground (a load of rocks and uneven floors)
6) The Earth's Core (probably want it to look like Hell, with a load of lava)

And since everyone likes screenshots, here's the background designs of worlds 1, 2 & 5:

World 1:Image
World 2:Image
World 5-1:Image
World 5-4:Image

Don't worry, it's split up into layers for the actual game.

I was thinking that all of the backgrounds would be like pixel art, something like this:
Image.

Don't give me credit for this, I just slapped together a load of other images.

I need help!

For the "Deep Underground" World, should I have this background:
Image

or this one:
Image

I'm kinda leaning toward the first one, but I wanted a second opinion, so I could choose the best one.

Yeah, the second one looks like you putted more work into it, and I triple falconsblack's idea.

Since the world after is the "Earth's Core" world, should it start with the blue one, and slowly transition to red over the 4 levels?

Also, thanks for helping out with the backgrounds, falconsblack, but I think I'll stick to mine, because I want it to look a lot like pixel art. Sorry about me being a harsh jerk.

I have added the designs to world 2, so as you progress through each level, you appear to be going closer to the Earth's surface and getting closer to night.

The background test for this is in the download at the top of the page (either .RAR or .ZIP file).

I plan to have this decreasing height format throughout all 6 worlds, so that's 24 different background designs for the mappack in total (plus one or two for the sub levels).

And if you don't want to download and test the parallax, here are screenshots:

And these:

Nice amount of detail in everything so far. Keep it up! (I DEMAND YOU TOO!!!)

That sounds like a really funny idea, maybe Mario gets more and more stupid as he progresses through the worlds.

Anyways, you came here for development work, so here you go:

World 1-1: Image
World 1-2: Image
World 1-3: Image
World 1-4: Image

There's still an issue with the parallax on Worlds 1-3 and 1-4, because you end up seeing the Earth again if you go far enough (I've tried to counteract this by setting the scrollfactor to the highest setting before 9.00, but it still doesn't work). I'll probably either make the levels shorter in 1-3 and 1-4, or increase the background width.

Also included is my idea for what I want World 1-1 to be like in terms of level design. I want it to be fairly platformy, with a little portalling involved.

Here's the download links (they'll also be changed at the top).

couldnt it be like you're orbiting earth, so you see it over and over?

If it was supposed to look like you're orbiting Earth, then the planet would do the rotating, and it would still stay in the center of the screen. I think I'm going to change the pixel width of the Earth in Worlds 1-3 and 1-4 from 512 to 1024.

Thanks, falconsblack. That was a pretty stupid error on my part. It'll get changed when I've got more of the outer space tileset done.

Course you can. I hope this doesn't end up with 10 people using every tile I've got before I've released the mappack, though.

I tried what you have right now, and it looks pretty cool. The only thing is, it's very hard to distinguish the foreground from the background. I think making some slight color changes to some of the tiles could help.

Dayum, that's amazing! But there is a little problem with the tiles, because I've already covered the one's you used for world 3, but I think I can get around that with a little rearranging of my stuff. I think we should split the tileset, so the first eleven tiles (the ones on the left) are the space I'm allowed to put stuff on and the second eleven tiles are the stuff you can use, something like this:
Image
Don't worry about rearranging tiles, I've sorted that out now.

Well, I'm incredibly impressed with this, it's great. But there's a couple of things I need to question:
With the building tiles, I think that they may need either outlining, or something else being done to them to make them stand out a little more, because I'm having a little trouble telling them apart from the background.
Also, I was thinking to put in my own water tiles instead of the standard blue water one in the original tiles, possibly something a little more dirtier and browner.
For levels 3-3 and 3-4, do you think that you could make the bridge support portion look really grimy? Maybe put in a lot of dirt and a little graffiti on those areas.
Thank you so much for your contribution, I'm really astounded with the work you've put into this. I'm really glad that you've made good use of the pipe tiles, because I didn't think I would be able to use them at all, but they seem to work in world 3.

Also, would you like to work on the level design on some of the other worlds? You seem to have done a really good job on 3-1, and I can't really get anything to work on world 1.
Ganondalf wrote:I tried what you have right now, and it looks pretty cool. The only thing is, it's very hard to distinguish the foreground from the background. I think making some slight color changes to some of the tiles could help.
And to you Ganondalf, I'm getting rid of the meteors that were in the background of world 1, and possibly lightening the sun and earth a little, so they feel more like background graphics

Sure! the level 3-1 was just me messing around a bit to see if i could get some tiles that looks well with the theme :> i can gladly fix those things you wanted too!
Also if you want me to help make the actual levels I'll be fine with that. just tell me which levels you want me to help with and what you want it to be like and i'll get to it

to take good screenshots, make your life easier by reducing the ratio before taking the screenshot (so I don't have to use your crappy image with borders and shit :D) and I suggest using viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1278, which works very (came) well.

yes indeed, speaking of which we should maybe do something like have an ask list and have about say 4 or 5 slots for people who wish to be in it? that or select a few popular people from here ourselves to insert. :>

Should we just select people whose avatars we think will look good in the game?
It would be nice if we could have an ask list, but that may bring up issues with who gets in first (and I don't want this thread to be spammed with 3 pages of people saying "Plzplzplzplzplzplzplzplzplzplzplzplzplzpickme").
Another alternative is to pick someone randomly from the members list, but that may also cause some problems (e.g. we randomly pick Camewel).
I think us just selecting people is the best option for the forum and the mappack.

Also, I think I'll just work on the background and tileset for the mappack. Doing the level design really isn't working for me.

Sorry for the double post, but I've created a progress tracker for the mappack, so people aren't doing things other people are doing, and we have an idea of what there is left to do.
Here is it's current state:
