Just a quick discussion thread about control schemes. For persons that are still just realizing the game exists, this should help people find their control schema of choice. For me, the following controls work rather nicely;

Joypad (PS1 / PS2)
Right-stick X / Y: Move portal gun
Left-stick X / Y or D-Pad: Move Mario
1 / Triangle: Place blue portal
2 / Circle: Place orange portal
3 / Cross: Reset portals
4 / Square: Pick up item
5 / L2: Run
6 / L1: Jump

If I wasn't lazy I could also define button 9 as select (Down) and button 10 as start (enter), and maybe use the other buttons for various different things but the above is my basic setup.

I don't use a controller, but this might also help other keyboard users. How mine's setup is like this;

Keyboard & Mouse(Obviously, lol).
Arrow keys that follow their exact directions, (Left Right Up Down) For Movement.
Z = Jump
x = Running (And stuff like picking up things, ect.)
R = Resetting the portals
E = use..? (I really dont know what this is supposed to be)
Mouse = Shooting portal 1, 2 or both

Pretty much all my control setups revolve around having Z and X as the main controls, reverse or not.

  • Run: Q
  • Reload: Space
  • Use: E

Player 1: The keyboard and mouse.
  • Move: SZXC
  • Jump: Space
  • Run/Fire: Left shift
  • Aim portals: Move mouse
  • Portal 1: Left mouse button
  • Portal 2: Right mouse button
  • Reload: A
  • Use: D
Players 2, 3, and 4: Three PS2-ish PC joysticks. One's an old Logitech Dual Action, the other two are cheap no-name brands I found at Walmart. (Well, strictly speaking, I found the Logitech one at Walmart too. Must've been lucky or something. Heh. ^_^;)
  • Move: D-pad
  • Jump: Bottom face button
  • Run/Fire: Left face button
  • Aim portals: Left analog stick
  • Portal 1: Left front shoulder button
  • Portal 2: Right front shoulder button
  • Reload: Left back shoulder button
  • Use: Right back shoulder button
I usually play on the player 1 slot, but sometimes, when I'm playing 1.6, I'll start up a 2-player game and play as player 2 (mainly to remind myself how bad I am on a controller compared to on keyboard, lol :p).

It's just like the PS2 controller. If you're having trouble mapping because it's PS4, try x360ce for XInput support and easy-mode mapping.

I can't play without a controller (Not enough key rollover). IDK why people keep saying they suck with a pad.

up arrow: jump/button B
right arrow to: run/button A
w: up
a: left
s: low
d: right

my controls are that way because: when I tried to emulate NES games on my computer, the controls were the default of most of emulators: arrows, X and Z.
one day, my down arrow stopped working, so I put in D, for some reason =P. and then after the left arrow to stopped working, and so I created this configuration.

sorry is something is wrong, i am brazilian

My configuration is quite unusual.

W: Up
A: Left
S: Down
D: Right
Space: Jump
Shift: Run
Use: E
Reload: R

So strange.

Left - Left arrow
Right - Right arrow
Up - Up arrow
Down - Down arrow
Jump - X
Run - Z
Reload - Q
Use - C
Left - Left joystick (left direction)
Right - Left joystick (right direction)
Up - Up d-pad*
Down - Down d-pad*
Jump and Use - A/B**
Run and Reload - X/Y**
Move portal - Right joystick
Place portal 1 - L
Place portal 2 - R
Pause - Plus

Sometimes I use these buttons since it's much simpler:
Jump - ZL
Run - ZR
Reload - Push left joystick
Use - Push right joystick
*When I try making the left, right, up and down controls for the left joystick fully, the player crouches when the controller's left joystick is 5% downwards.
**For "jump", if I use A, I use B for "use", vice versa
