There's a faith plate on the area to the left. Just think with portals.

This one is really not intuitive and took me a good deal of trial and error. My hint is to place a portal on the floor just before the laser. Good luck! All of the levels in this map are challenging, but I don't think any are as frustrating as this first puzzle.

Puzzles aren't user interfaces, the term "intuitive" doesn't apply to them. What the hell are you thinking.

I disagree, lots of puzzles are straight forward in their execution. Puzzles like the one found at the beginning of this level involved a hidden component and a strange change in vector. This makes it less intuitive than puzzles where all the pieces of visible or laid out in a straight forward manner. That doesn't make it bad, just less straight forward to solve.
I very much enjoyed this mappack and hope we get more like this.

The one with the obvious arrow?

I also can't seem to get past 1-1. As far as I can tell at the moment, there is no surface that the faith plate can use to send you across the laser.

EDIT: Huh. Doing the exact same thing as before worked all of a sudden. Which is strange, because for the past day I've been doing the exact same thing.

Also, since when does "intuitive" only apply to user interfaces?

I accidentally solved this puzzle in very little time.
I don't see what everyone else has issues with.

You probably shot your first portal from the wrong side. Portals are angle-sensitive.

Also, puzzles should explicitly NOT be intuitive, because then it's no puzzle anymore. (if thats what you mean by "intuitive" in this case)
Stop calling stuff impossible or a bug just because you can't get it to work the first time you try.
Instead try trying harder ... ;)

There was a problem that I had with the faith plate when I went into the portal in the first chamber, I put my portals in the correct locations but I didn't fly across the map as what was expected. I flew straight up and hit my head on the ceiling. If you go in the portal backwards (facing right) mario does not go the direction he is intended. Because the player is most likely to keep their mouse in the center of the screen (probably to prevent the mouse from going too far off screen) this puzzle may be needlessly difficult for no immediately apparent reason. To correctly solve the puzzle the player must have their mouse to the left of mario while entering the portal that the faith plate needs to launch them through. This probably has something to do with the bug that caused the original portal campaign where mario had to use the acceleration gel to build up speed and launch himself over a laser, but sometimes would lose all acceleration and fall straight into the laser.
