Certain cheats not working

When I use the cheats: Minecraft and Gelcannon, the cheat's sprite (pickax for minecraft) appears, and there is no green/red line indicating I can shoot, but I still shoot portals. I use a rock candy xbox 360 controller to play, and the game works perfect other than this flaw/glitch.

well i remember that the minecraft-gelcannon cheats doesn't works with controllers, but i'm not sure

You can either beat the mario levels or type the konami code (up up down down left right left right b a)

You don't need to press start in order to activate it. The activation sound plays after you press the last "a".
And start wasn't part of the original konami code either, it was just there to start the game iirc.
