My son heard about Mario from a school friend but had problems installing it on Linux Mint 17.1. I've just sorted it out for him so I thought I'd post the steps here in case it helps someone else. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu so this process probably works with Ubuntu as well.

Mari0 1.6 only works with LÖVE 0.8.0, but the repositories have been updated with the latest version, 0.9.0 at the time of writing this.

LÖVE 0.8.0 is available, but the deb package used a Multiple-image Network Graphics library called libmng1 which has now been replaced by libmng2.

so the process I used is:

1) download the appropriate libmng1 deb package from http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/libmng1 and install it with gdebi.

2) download the appropriate LÖVE 0.8.0 deb package from https://love2d.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8750 and install it with gdebi. Do NOT take the upgrade when it is offered.

3) download Mari0 1.6 from http://stabyourself.net/dl.php?file=mar ... -linux.zip and extract it.

my son is now happily playing it. :->

If I ever use Linux this'll be one of the first things I try. Even if I don't use Linux for another 10 years. I'll try anyways.
Thanks for the potential help, this sounds great from what I can tell (at least as far as LÖVE goes).

Have fun playing! :D
