It seems that a lot of the updates for SE will be done to give map makers more control over their maps. In light of this would it be a good idea to allow mappers to change mario's abilities for their map. For example maybe their making a clone of nsmb and they want to incorperate wall jumps and ground pounds. Or a SMB2 map and they want to disable running. It just seems to me that mappers would like this.

SMB2/USA does have running, to speak the truth. However the game it was built from (Doki Doki Panic) didn't have running by holding down B.

Exactly.
Mario.lua should be customizable based on map. (and maybe lua entities too)

Maybe not add new functions, but changing existing ones would be useful (higher jumps -> space level), or per player physics, Luigi's high jump, Mario's stopping quicker in SMB2

Well we should have new functions.
If we link that with custom entities in lua, anything would be possible.
The two go hand in hand, because it would allow for things like new power-ups, and new effects from colliding with enemies that aren't already programmed in.
