Mario with portals is pretty cool, but it's going to be even cooler with the map editor. Does anyone have any ideas for maps yet, in terms of themes, gameplay mechanics, etc.? If we're allowed to edit the default levels, I'm going to make some of them more difficult and put them in an advanced map pack :D like in the first Portal.

Thought about some levels in an urban environment. I also had an idea for a Moon level, but I think that's too much physics mess beyond my comprehension.

While I AM doing my best to recreate the feeling of SMB (especially with Mario's movement), my physics aren't spot on, so most of that won't work.

Though I'm pretty sure jumping at the exact start of level works, I managed to pull it off a while ago

I'm sure by 'remaking' he means that he'll tweak the specific measurements of the level to make it fit with your physics.

well sure it is easier to make SMB levels than portal because portal is 3d.
QUESTION:
Are you recreating maps form portal 1 or 2 or both?

I think so, there's a "custom" tab in the tileset menu.

Well, I'm pretty sure many levels use diagonal platforms, which it doesn't seem can be used in mari0 (only single sized square blocks are used as portalable surfaces)

mostly doable, except there is one difference between both games : bouncing off enemies, which you sometimes have to do to go past certain elements. But maybe portals can solve these problems tho :)

yeah I might have to change the terrain a bit to compensate for it :P
EDIT: Image
There that's a better example

I changed the SMB tileset to the SMB2 Japan one, looks good. The only thing that would require some map editing for a good conversion is the cloud areas, because there are 3 different solid cloud tiles instead of 1.

thanks for the info I might just leave it as the happy clouds or change another tile or something, I haven't seen the Tilesets yet (in-game) so I have no Idea how to change them...
EDIT: also to any one who has the beta, what would you sugest for the poisen mushrooms? is there a way to get a question block sqawn a goomba or just stick to good power ups sinse it's next to impossible to keep a powerup for more than 5 seconds :P ?

Making a boomba cmoe out of a question mark block would require messing with the source code, so you might as well create your own poison mushrooms. I'm pretty sure it's not that hard, even if you don't know muuch about coding. I'll give it a look.
Also, I was talking about retexturing the old SMB levels with the SMB2 Japan tiles, and what you want to do is recreate the SMB2J levels. In that case, I think it's pretty mandatory that you include the 3 cloud tiles, it's really not that much work. If you want, when the game comes out, I can give you the tiles I made, and then you can add all the stuff that I didn't include (I only replaced the old SMB tiles, the only thing that I actually added were those 2 extra cloud tiles).

EDIT: typos are fun

ok thanks for the feedback I was asking about the goomba thing because I wanted to make it level pack that doesent require you to mod the original game or something :P. guess I don't have a choice now... Oh well I have programing knowlege, also I would apreciate the skin pack as it would save me some time. I do plan on making a new topic to show progress when the mari0's released.

edit: keep in mind I don't have a beta so I have no idea how tiles are laid out :P
