Since mari0 is open source, is played by a lot of people in the world, i even found some korean guys playing it on youtube.
So, i was thinking of translating it in 4/5 languages, such as:
Spanish
Japanese
Chinese
Italian (i can do it, i'm italian)
German
And others i can't remember...
This would help a lot people in the option screen and in the mappack part.
What do you think of this idea?

I actully think this is a really good idea. Even though I can only speak english. :P
Maybe it could include a bonus language like "lolspeak". :P

if "lolspeak" was in the game I'd loose all hope in this community,
the only real use I could see for this is the settings, and considering that the original smb was only in English and had little to no text.
Also you guys are forgetting that most map pack names are in English.

Also it could be only translated for the default maps like portal or smb.
And maybe mappacks creator could select a multiple launguace option and insert the translated text.

You're right. :/ (also lol)xXxrenhoekxXx wrote:the multiple languages for map packs is a feature hardly anyone would bother to use. :\
What if Mari0 itself had multi-language support in options. You'd select it using A/D or Left/Right on the keyboard when it is highlighted. It would toggle from English to the other languages in the list, and set all text as it should be in said language.Matu_Il_Mito wrote:You're right. :/ (also lol)xXxrenhoekxXx wrote:the multiple languages for map packs is a feature hardly anyone would bother to use. :\

Matu misspelt Chinese in the first post. Sorry if I brought it up.
Otherwise, I'm all up for this concept. If only we could find some professionals for the job (since Google Translate doesn't do the job as well as others) and it would be oil if we old find a foreign-language Mari0 fan base with their own mappacks.
Two other requested languages I'd pick are Korean and Russian.

There are a few problems that arise with translations.Matu_Il_Mito wrote:Since mari0 is open source, is played by a lot of people in the world, i even found some korean guys playing it on youtube.

What do you think of this idea?
1) Translations that end up longer than current text: at some points it was already hard to fit just English text in, I have no idea how a language like German would be mashed in the limited space.
2) Limited space for characters - I honestly don't know much about Chinese/Japanese/Korean characters. What I do know however is that there is no way you can fit something like 汉语 in a 8x8 space. (Yeah yeah higher definition for text is possible, but no. Rule no.1 of pixel games.)
3) Implementation - Considering how text is rendered now (sometimes text is separated into line 1, line 2, etc.) and how it's hardcoded everywhere, moving everything would be just a massive hassle.
4) Is it even worth it - It would take time to implement all this, not to mention making sure translations are actually correct. I'd rather have English everywhere and keep it fully functional than end up with more problems just because of multiple languages being implemented.
Translations are all fine and dandy, perhaps I'll convince Maurice to implement support for them in the next project. But for Mari0 I don't think it's worth it. Basic English isn't THAT hard and the majority of internet users know it. I know I'm being a bit of an ass using that reasoning, but oh well. Mari0 isn't a story complex game, so I doubt anyone will miss out on anything in that department.

One of the only things that would pay to change is mappack descriptions, which would have to be done individually anyways
