How this could be achieved without custom text colours:

[offtopic] using that gif made you my favorite person [/offtopic]
i wouldn't have cared about good customization of level screen until you made that Mr.Q.Marx

let me add to that what i would think of as a good way to implement custom maps as level screen:
one .png would be the map in itself, one .txt would map coordinates to levels and one png would be the background, possibly tiled if that's not resource intensive or a uniform color could be specified.
this does not take the text into account because a higher level of customization would be necessary and I can't think of a simple way to implement that (other than css whee)

Is this related? If so could you possibly explain the idea?

Similar to expanding on the Super Mario Bros. 3 map, here's one for Super Mario Bros., the first 3 Worlds. I worked a little more on this one than the SMB3, but I still could have done more

Isn't that from Super Mario Bros. Deluxe?
Anyways, that's a good idea. :)

I meant that i also had this idea for level names.

Hmm, what about map scripts, like in SMW? Or animated level screens, so we can do something like in Mario Clash? (The monster which are on current level walk before the actual level starts)

Wow, the amount of customization being added into Mario SE just makes it seem like more than Super Mario Bros. with a Portal gun. Also, after looking at that SMB3-esque start screen, I think there should be a world map of some sort where you can go from world to world, and maybe connect the worlds all together like SMW and NSMB Wii U.

I think level start screens are enough. (keep in mind the original smb mappack should look like the original game.)
