Those of you who have been playing Mari0 and other Mario games for a long time (or have seen the screenshot marathon) may already know most of these tips, but people who are new or haven't played very much could have a lot to learn. These special tips and tricks are to help those who struggle on difficult mappacks, or to help mappack makers make more difficult mappacks relying on these tricks. Some of these are very basic; others are not. Feel free to contribute more advanced techniques!

ImageList of Advanced TechniquesImage

1. Mario can run across one-block-wide gaps. http://i.imgur.com/Dk3HY.gif

2. Projectiles can be redirected with portals! http://i.imgur.com/1NacJ.gif http://i.imgur.com/Htssq.gif http://i.imgur.com/YdWjI.gif

3. When Mario jumps as he's standing just barely under a block, he will be guided out of the way. http://i.imgur.com/HkWdy.gif

4. Mario jumps four blocks high normally and five blocks high after running at least two or three blocks. His lowest jump is one and a half blocks high.

5. Mario can stand on the very edge of a ledge and not fall off. http://i.imgur.com/ZnkUV.png

6. Portals are two blocks wide, and can affect anything two blocks wide or less. Such as Bowser.

7. F12 locks the mouse within the Mari0 window, so that you can't accidentally click outside of the window and mess something up (pause the game, ruin the flow, etc.)

8. Mario can stand between two lasers or light bridges that are right next to each other.

9. The beam that shows which direction Mario is aiming can be used to discern which tiles are solid and which aren't. http://i.imgur.com/gzvxZ.png

10. When aiming the portal gun: The farther the mouse pointer is away from Mario, the more precision you have with your angles.

11. When approaching the flagpole: Stand on the top step of the staircase. It is two blocks wide (or it should be). Position Mario on the far left side, so that he is hanging on the ledge just barely. Run to the right and jump at the last second; Mario will almost always hit the top of the flagpole.

12. It is possible to learn Mario's jump angle and get a feel for where he is going to land when he jumps; however, this takes time and patience. The best way to do this is to place a few blocks in the level editor. What is the difference between one long jump and a series of short hops? How does pressing left affect a jump to the right? Can Mario jump really high to the right, and come back down to the left, landing on the same block? Does hopping off of an enemy at the peak of Mario's jump really affect the jump that much? Don't be discouraged at a lack of skill in the beginning; keep trying.

13. No matter where Mario makes contact with an enemy, if he is heading downwards, he will squash it. (Thanks xXxrenhoekxXx and Superjustinbros!)

14. It is possible to use portals to scale a portalable wall that Mario can't climb himself. It takes a combination of skill, luck, and patience (only if there's a lack of the first two). Mario is difficult to control, because he will move left or right only out of whichever portal he is standing more than halfway through. The last jump is tricky, and is the only time when Mario is jumping that technique #3 won't apply, making it even more difficult. http://i.imgur.com/NXJjM.png (Thanks Camewel!)

Many of us that have played Mario games know the first one; and a few of the others. Good list either way. :)

This is quite a good list. Although many have played Super Mario Bros. before and know this, as already stated, it's a good list for those who haven't played before, those who are beginners, or those who just want to freshen up on their Mario knowledge. It'd be a good list to expand on if new tips are found. Overall, very helpful. Great job WillWare.

I'd like to contribute,
no matter what area you get touched by an enemy, if you're haeded downwards the enemy will get squished.

I discovered this in smb2j by accident and tried the same technique in mari0 and it worked.

Many people call it the Hat Stomp, though I prefer referring to it as the Take Down. Just sounds cooler.

You forgot the portal wall climb trick, where you use a single portal to scale a portalable surface.

Actually the "last" jump will work if you placed the "last" portal like this
And somehow doesn't work if you placed it like this

Not really out of topic, but is this suppose to be some kind of "Did you know Mari0"?

Because here there is a block above your head.

Something related to the edge-standing trick: If the ledge you are on has another ledge right below it, you can shoot portals to the below ledge. Kind of handy sometimes.

@renhoek: WillWare did list "redirect hammers" as "advanced" technique, it's the 2nd picture in the technique #2
@victoryzombie: yes running over 1 block gaps is a advanced tachnique, I failed it everytime, how do you even did it?

Thank you, victorygoomba. I would never figure that out without you
So it wasn't a advanced technique after all

Really? When? No one have ever told me that

*Ok so I have to stop being sarcastic and not keeping this conversation going on forever, or else Saso will come and lock this thread up
Running through 1-block-wide gap is just "kinda" a "advanced" technique, most people knew it, but it's up to WillWare to remove it or not, not like he's a official game.. guy or something

Maybe I am... O_O
 I'm not.

I'm going to keep the first technique on the list, though, because even if it isn't really an advanced technique, many people don't know about it.

Also, at some point today I'll update the list with the new suggestion. Whenever I feel like it, I guess.

what about going through the map sometimes if you have an infinite loop and then straight up if there are solid tiles

That's a glitch, though I may add how to navigate if this occurs.
Also, it's "through," not "threw." You could also try "thru."

Use bullet time to slow time down will make the physics in Mari0 turn "normal" like it should be
Therefore no more going through stuffs
