Recently, MyNintendoNews.com posted an article about Nintendo president Shigeru Miyamoto and his belief that Japanese gamers are "quitters and don’t enjoy hard games" Here's the full article. It's certainly an interesting claim, but what I found even more amusing was the responses. You can see them in this article. Here are some examples of the responses:

“It’s because they only know how to make games for children now.”

“Who wants to play a game where if you miss one pixel on the screen it is an instant game over.”

“Certainly, you need perseverance to play on the Wii U. Holding that horribly heavy pad was just too much for me.”

Honestly, I think they blew it way out of proportion, but I'd like to know what you guys think. Are Nintendo's games too childish or too difficult? If a game is too challenging, does that really make it a bad game? Are modern gamers "too busy" to play games that require more free time?

Nintendo needs to be harder. You just need to be better, faster, stronger.

Every game is good and fine the way it is, and if you don't like the game, don't ask them to fix it, play something else.

I'd say this is true, but only to an extent. If a developer makes the most amazing game ever created but only works on 1% of computers, then that game isn't fine. It should be fixed.
Though you're probably talking about design, I still wanted to point that out.
so your saying the game isnt fine cuz it only works on one thing? yea i agree on that one that would definally mean it needed to be fixed

Actually I think nintendo games are still very hard (world 9 in nsmbu was a bitch) and I don't think a game needs to have game overs or lives to be hard (look at super meat boy) The problem is people find older games harder because they were young and had no idea how they worked properly, any one who's play smb should get the idea, if you can remember the first time you played 1-1 how long did it take you to beat it?

Did you know that there was a warp pipe? Did you know there's a run button? Did you know you could shoot fireballs? Did you know there's a time limit? Did you know there's lives? Did you know there's game overs? Did you know there's a hidden one up at the begging of the level?

Now compare it to how you play now
How many times have you beaten 1-1 in less than 100 seconds? Or how long does it take you to reach world 4's warp zone to world 8?

Games aren't getting easier you're just more experienced at games, think about it if the past you picked up a modern game do you think they'd have as easy a time as you do now?

Though the one thing I don't like is the "Died too many times? Here let us beat the level!" option they've been pushing (or it can be seen as a good thing too as it discourages you to die so many times because you have to die 10 times to see it in the first place making you think you suck at the game).
My Brother's opinion on this thing is that it's like having someone else watch you play and seeing you die so many times they take it over for you to beat it.

Ren, that's all well and good until you realise that it doen't hold at all. If, right now, I was to go play NSMB, I could probably beat the final boss without dying more than a few times. If I was to go play SMB, I might get a game over before reaching the final boss. The NES generation of games were harder.

Well, if you start at the final boss, that's completely different then playing from the start. Unless that was just a mistake in the typing.
Also, I would actually die a lot on that level.

It really depends on what game you're playing.

For example I think this level in NSMBU is harder than any level I've played in smb.
but
I believe every level in smb is harder than nsmb2
as you said the boss in smb1 is harder than the boss in NSMB.
smb
NSMB (was going to use mega mushroom footage but I couldn't find one that was good quality.)

It's all about money. (it sounds dick-ish, but it's simply how that world ticks)
They want to sell as many copies as they can, thus they have to make games that appeal to as many people as they can.
Game development on that scale and at these times is incredibly expensive and getting a profit out of a game is tougher than you probably imagine.
I would love a more challenging game, but they're hard to make, expensive and aren't likely to make a profit because it would appeal to a smaller crowd.
It's also far from just the Japanese gamers, it's world wide.
One of many reasons I like NES and SNES games so much, the true roots of games. Game Over? HAHA, you better restart it.

This is a good example of a trick Nintendo have been doing for a while now: hiding challenge after the final boss, where casual players would never find it. Galaxy 2 had the Grandmaster Galaxy, NSMBW and NSMBU had World 9. It's an interesting trick and it works well, it's just a shame that there often isn't much challenge content.

What really separates SMB from NSMB is how forgiving it is and how easy it is to harvest 1UPs. You get a Game Over in SMB, you have to restart, you get a Game Over in NSMB, you restart where you saved last. You fail multiple times in SMB, you play it the same way. You do that in NSMB, you have the option to replay the level by itself. With 1UPs, SMB had one hidden in every level, otherwise, you did it with coins. NSMB, you can repeat any level that has a chance at multiple 1UPs as much as you want (which in the case of 1-1 in the first New game, could be around 10). At least they could make it like SMB3 until the game is done to replay the levels. The only time you can get a ton of lives in SMB, you might end up killing yourself from time or a koopa, and you don't have a ton of lives to keep trying it

Lost levels wasn't really hard in terms of legitimate difficulty. It just had some moments of cheap spots. It's fun, and it does get hard, but it's more for the cheap factor instead of actual progressing difficulty.
If you don't agree then hey, that's just his opinion. You don't have to believe it.
