The idea for this thread cam from here, so here goes nothing!

Image
This is just a thread to discuss Wii and Wii U Hacking/Softmodding.
Below this text explains what Wii Hacking/Softmodding is. Scrolling down will allow you to view some hacks and modifications made by the community. :)
Or, click this button to be teleported to the hacks/modifications!
Hacks/Modifications

What is Wii Hacking/Softmodding?
Well, basically you are altering the Wii's software to do some cool stuff. What cool stuff? Well, stuff like this:

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

You can make custom levels!

Exploding Island
Mushroom Hills
You can also make FULL hacks for NSMBWii!

Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii: Summer Sun
Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii
Progress

You can also have Model/Texture hacks!

Wario in NSMBWii
Mario Kart Wii

You can make custom tracks/courses!

Golden Mushroom Cup (part of CTGP Revolution)
CTGP Revolution 1.02 - Track Montage
You can also have Texture/Model hacks for this game, too!

Wreck-it-Ralph in Mario Kart Wii
You can even add custom music!

Troy's Custom Music Pack

This is also a good example of what you can do with your hacked Wii:

Now, if you want to hack your Wii, I recommend watching this tutorial. Make sure annotations are on too.
This is not recommended to do if you are inexperienced with computers and electronics.
This site is also a good reference point: https://sites.google.com/site/completesg/

And, if your Wii is already hacked, but don't know how to start, just check out this site, WiiBrew: http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Main_Page

Last of all, if you run out of places to find information, just ask me, or other people on other sites, such as Rvlution.net, or GBATemp.net.

Also one last note, DO NOT try to hack your Wii U, as this can possibly brick vWii (Wii Mode), or even Wii U Mode.

Hacks/Modifications
To see your own hacks here, post it here with a download, or PM me, and I'll put it in the main post!

Lately I've been modifying Mario Kart Wii and have been adding custom music.
I may release the custom music pack soon if anyone wants it. :)

I made a couple NSMBW hacks a while ago but I'm too sick to even go into my basement.

I modded Brawl too. With custom textures, music, and all that good stuff.
And for a SD Card, I use a 2GB one. I normally remove a hack to use another.
It's recommended anyways to have a 2GB one, so that would be the one to get if you want another.

What's the point of making an apology thread for posting a needlessly vague question then posting another needlessly vague question.
There is nothing anyone can do if all you're giving us is "locked up my Wii".

You've probably bricked your wii, if you don't know what that means well... You'd better just put a brick where your wii was.
(more details about what you were doing to the game may help someone solve this for you.)

EDIT: oh yeah and I remember someone posted a comment on my youtube channel asking me if I've ever experimented modifying nsmb wii.
Do you guys think I should give it a go?

If you know what you're doing, yes.
I know quite a bit about it, but not too much. If you want for information, go to http://rvlution.net/forums/.
These people know a lot about Wii Hacking.

If you know how to do that kind of stuff, then I suggest you get CleanRip (Wii homebrew), and then rip the game. This is risking possibly damaging the disc, though.
I ripped a game I didn't care about too much, and I think it still plays, but I'm not too sure. It could glitch up even one tiny thing in the game.
ShankYourself.net wrote:Hacked Animal Crossing for my cousin and it locked up my Wii. Anyway to fix this? I can't find anything on youtube.
If you have BootMii installed (also called boot2), and made a backup of your Wii (backing up the Wii NAND and KEY .bin files), then you can try restoring it.
I thought I once bricked my Wii, and tried restoring it, but it didn't work for some reason. It has something to do with BootMii.
Once again, go to Riivolution.net and ask the people there for more information.
But, it is odd how your cousins Wii got bricked because of hacking a game. Most of the time, it's because of installing a IOS, unofficial update, Wii menu skin, or a modified NAND. Are you sure you didn't do anything else?
By the way, my Wii is not bricked.

I've used this tool to load nsmb wii mods (newer smb wii to be specific) before so it's not a matter of how should I do it's more of a should I do it question.

Well, if you know how to do it, and want to take the like %1 chance of ruining your NSMBWii disc, I'd say go for it. :P

Try reading on their site. http://www.bootmii.org
I'd trying reading the FAQ.
Here are some more pages to read.
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Talk:BootMii
http://gbatemp.net/threads/bootmii-does ... ll.300548/
GBATemp is another site for Wii Hacking if I didn't mention it earlier.

And sorry for the double post. Just realized it. :P

There is no risk using Riivo as long as you're not monumentally moronic and go out of your way to intentionally brick it. It cannot affect the disc at all.

Also yeah apparently I'm important in the MKWii community although this is solely due to being friends with Bean/Sword/Troy.

Maybe he bricks his Wii so hard, the disc drive laser gets capable of burning and corrupts the disc!

Ok, maybe I didn't understand what renhoek said, or you're all being sarcastic.
By modding, I thought you meant getting the game files and editing them.
I guess you were talking about running mods with Riivolution. Yes, there is no problem with running Riivolution. Unless you want to edit that. :P

So Riivo can't hurt the disk, but can it hurt the wii (or will it)?

There's actually also no risk to your disc/wii from using cleanrip either.
Riivo will not hurt your Wii.

Not bad for your first a custom track! Just give it some better looking textures, and it should look a lot better!
And thanks for the opinion. :)

It is bad and it's not my first custom track. I designed and made the whole thing in about half an hour (I think it was to prove a point that I could make a CT or something), so really it's just a test track just like BigBox and ASDF_course so it'll be in the pack instantly.

This here, is a good custom track. Look at this, then look at mine again. This one will certainly make it into 1.03 when it gets released in 2014, whereas, mine will not.

Camewel, your track doesn't look bad at all. It actually looks rather fun. If you were to texture it and make it all pretty pretty then I think it'd be a great track to race on.

The only custom stuff I have on top of the standard CTGPR stuff is a penguin character which I'm not meant to share and anti-glitch stuff which I'm definitely not meant to share.

Idiot with the ninja, it was in danger of being fun at one point, when that "shortcut" I showed Lap 3 was viable, it was pretty fun. I scaled it up because it wasn't meant to be a fun track.
I'll probably make a track one day. I had plans to make one with Sword0fSeals but I think he's going solo.

Just trying to be sure, if I want Newer Super Mario Bros Wii, I just need to install:
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_Channel
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Riivolution

I just can't afford to mess up my wii...
(not that they are that expensive now a days, but I'd rather not have to give out $100 for a good one)

The FAQ says he's never seen anyone brick their wii because of this, but still...
Does everyone else here feel it is completely safe?

As long as you follow the instructions in the How-to's on the wiki, you'll be fine. I've used Riivolution for quite a bit and my Wii and games are still perfectly functional. (Except NSMBW, but that's due to disc mishandling on my part. Irresponsible people + games = Bye bye game).

If you install BootMii then you'd have to put genuine effort in to brick it.

Oh, and also expert critique on that track what I made.

Ok, so I'm going to try this out today.
I am probably going to use Return of the Jodi, since I have the game required for it, and it seems easy enough.
I would download this:
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Return_of_the_Jodi
but it says it needs a boot.elf as well.

I'm assuming I would download this as well:
http://bootmii.org/download/

From the bootmii download, would I put all contents of that file with the Return Of The Jodi, or just the boot.elf?

Having some friends over today, and I really want to try newer smbw

I did it!

Newer Super Mario Bros is fun! I think it's really cool how World 1 is  based on Yoshi's Island
I've only done the first level so far  and went to yoshi's house like in super mario world , but it looks awesome.
It takes a little bit longer to load sometimes, but it's totally worth it.
(My disk drive is rapidly blinking when I play this, though. Is that a problem?)

Disk drive blinks when Riivo is loading stuff. Because of custom music, it's always loading stuff. Ergo, perpetual blinking.

Im not into all these game mods stuff(even tho I kinda have a modded Wii), but anyway there's absolutely no way for any kind of mod/hack to edit or write data on game discs throuhg the console itself, that being the Wii or any other console.

Nope. Your fine. I don't the wii has the ability to burn discs.
Newer SMB is really cool, too.
It doesn't even effect your save data (it creates it's own save file)
I don't know about other games though.

No game from what I know of that get's ran with Riivolution can edit the disc files.
It can however, affect your save data if you made it possible within the .xml file.
Another thing to note, is that if you edit the graphics for a game such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl (SSBB), and allow it to save to the original save file, it won't break it in anyway. However, if you edit a model in SSBB, and save a replay, it could end up breaking your save file, or breaking the replay, both of which would probably freeze your Wii.
But, I've never experimented with this, so correct me if I'm wrong.

You can't crash Brawl with custom model replays.
