You can get email notifications of new posts in a thread. You subscribe on a thread-by-thread basis. Not sure if you can do an entire forum or board subscription.

There's a "see unread posts" link at the top of the front page which I bookmarked, but it's for the whole forum. If you really want to keep track of a single thread, subscribing is the way to go.
