I don't have a problem with you judging it was just a bit weird for some of the explanations. :P

EDIT: added a summary of my game in my submission.

Yeah. Maybe we should ask Idiot if you should judge by sprite or by summary.

I'm not to fond of being a judge because my submission would not be accepted :P (plus I don't want to)

LightningFire wrote: Explosive Pogo Knights: Awesome sprite and awesome summary, but there's one problem. I don't see what you could do in a game like that. And even if you did find something to do in it, it will most probably end up turning into a bomberman clone.
really? i'll try to elaborate what i said here then:
TheSeek wrote:@Jorichi that's actually awesome! And i guess it would be a really fun game to play, I already imagine a gameplay for it...
as i immagined it, it would be a mix of chess with timed pawns(the knights, which pogos will explod after a determined time) and those strategy flash games where you have to upgrade your forces to defeat the enemy...
3 classes(or more?) of knights(plus a king) with different pogo abilities(directions and jump lenght to pass obstacles) and attack values.
the pogo time before it explodes will constantly decrease for each kinight on the field, with chances to make it slower or to increase it.
kinghts can be kiled either blocking them to let the pogo time end and make them die, or attacking them directly(they'll have HP), or decreasing their pogo time.
upgrades would be different for each classes, and would be like for jump lenght, attack, pogo time and such.
the objective would be to defend your team's king and to kille the opponent's team's king.

the only negative side(to me at least) would be that i dont think it would be an easy game to code cuz of many variables and settings...but i still haven't understand if the "makeable game" thing has any importance in this contest.

I thought It would be a game where you have to kill the other team by dropping bombs on yourself, causing you to go flying, and kill them at landing on them.
maybe even the body parts fly, becoming objects in the game.
and some CTF, too.

What I imagined is a bunch of pogo knights hopping around and trying to do as much damage as possible by blowing themselves up.

When I rolled it I thought of a Lemmings meets Angry Birds kind of gameplay.
Your knights hop around in a starting area. You select one and assign him a 'job' or 'attack style' (Thought of by lemmings)
You can then control you knight, you hop out of the area and try to clear a path between you and your enemy (may I note I had a fully destructible environment in mind) with the least knights as possible. Certain attack types would require specific actions (Ex. tapping mouse button, dragging mouse, aiming, timing mouse click, etc.) (thought of by Angry Birds and Burrito Bison Revenge). Then you can attack your enemy, which could be a building, vehicle or group of enemies. This could also be nice to play as a multiplayer.
But I didn't give it much thought beyond that.

Man, quite a bit happens on this thread when I'm sick. I should get sick more.
TheJonyMyster wrote:Yeah. Maybe we should ask Idiot if you should judge by sprite or by summary.
The judging is done by sprite/title screen and not the summary. The summary is just an extra help to understand the title screen. It's not required to make a summary but it helps quite a bit.
Also LF, thanks for the feedback but I hope you know "Plunger of the Damned" was just my example entry and won't be in the contest.

Pyrosaur may have pulled of a late-game steal here, as that is a rather beautiful title screen.

I'll just let Rokit boy handle the game giveaway if he chooses to. It was his idea, so it's better off in his hands.

Also to anyone who's wanting to enter but hasn't yet: today's the last day. No rush intended, but you better submit something today.

Hey guys I think I'm late
Image
The older one I made a week ago was scrapped cause it wasn't 'cool' enough
And for some dumb reasons I thought today (yesterday now) was the last day, so I rushed and made this like in 3 hours constantly, so the result is pretty bad...
Meh, here the summary for the game anyway:
"For years, mushroom and human have been enemies, but as time goes on, human getting smarter and soon outclassed mushroom. Until one day, when a mushroom had have enough, he sneaked into a top secret laboratory and.. messed up science stuffs. The science stuffs transformed the mushroom into... something else."
In the game, you'll control Teh Mushroom fly over the world as he shooting fiery lasers, thunder shockwaves, freezing breath.. IDK most likely anything possible to destroy the Human and save Mushroomanity

BTW, are we judging out of 10? And then average all the ratings out into a final rating?
Example:
Design: 8/10
Creativity: 6/10
Color Usage 9/10
Does it look fun? 8/10
OVERALL RATING: 7.75/10

Also, I am using the catagories you mentioned.

Bonko wrote:BTW, are we judging out of 10? And then average all the ratings out into a final rating?
Yes, you'll be judging exactly like that, except the overall rating will look like (31/40), to show total points altogether instead of an average. Easier maths for me when adding up the scores for all 4 judges
Using your example:
Design: 8/10
Creativity: 6/10
Color Usage 9/10
Does it look fun? 8/10
OVERALL RATING: 31/40

What I'm going to do is, once I post saying "No more entries after this post" once today is over, I'll have the judges judge each entry and have them send me their scores via PM. I'll then compile all the scores together and make another post showing all the scores and announcing the winning entry.

That's pretty much what the color usage category is for anyway. Can't really judge color for a game that looks like a Game Boy game, so you have to say how well it uses the shades of gray. I guess it could be named visual appeal though, I'll decide later.
Qcode wrote:Then do you have any plans about if the game is going to be actually made?
That depends if the community would be willing to help with it. I'm all for it as I'm sure a few of you are too, but since I can't code for my life yet, those of you who know how would need to jump in on it too.

I think the fifth category you said there should be should be "Drawing." How well things are drawn. It wouldn't be very good if a bad drawng won the contest because of the other categories.

The color usage can stay, because if the game is black and white it can still be rated, but for it's purpose, because you can have bad and good color bor game boy.

And that is it, deadline reached. No new entries after this post will be accepted. (though I doubt anyone else was entering.)

For the 3 judges:
It's time for you to judge. I'm sure you know the 4 categories by now, but just in case, they are:
Design, Creativity, Color Usage/Visual Appeal (I don't care how it's named), and "Does it look fun".
Each category is out of 10 points, for a total of 40. Example:
Design: 8/10
Creativity: 6/10
Color Usage 9/10
Does it look fun? 8/10
OVERALL RATING: 31/40

You are also free to leave some thoughts on each piece if you want, though it's not required.
As soon as you have a score for all entries, send them to me via PM so I can compile them all and announce the winner and show the scores.

A quick question: Now that the deadline has been reached, will there be more contests? Or will this be a one-time thing?
I really enjoyed it, and I'm sure others did as well, so I was hoping there would be a next round/contest/challenge.

The next round should be themed, or Idiot announces a random game name and we ALL do that name, or something like that. This would add a challenge.

I agree. Instead of us generating a random name, idiot should choose a interesting name that could make very variants of entries and provide some neat work.

I don't think idiot should organise the next one because his entry was too good not to be counted.

And anyway I'd like to do a spriting contest like this but to design all the sprites in an already-made game and the winner gets to decide what the next game's theme is going to be.

So, Camewel, everyone would put sprites in for different parts of the game, and the gamemaker decides which ones best.
People would submit entries for different parts of the game, and the best entry for each part would get put in the game.

EDIT: I also finished the judging and sent idiot the PM.

And it's time to announce the winner. The top three spots are:

1st Place: Shrunken Dinosaur in the Desert by Pyrosaur (145/160 total)
2nd Place: Explosive Pogo Knights by Jorichi (137/160 total)
3rd Place: Monster Mushroom in the Sky by Chippy348 (131/160 total)

Congratulations Pyrosaur! And thanks to everyone who participated. This went way better than I expected.

And here's the final scores too. I couldn't find a way to show each individual judge's score in a good way that would avoid making this post super-crazy long. So I'm just gonna show the combined score for each entry. If you're interested in the individual judges scores as well, send me a PM and I'll be glad to send you them.

Read some posts up, Jorichi asked if this was a one-timer or if there'd be a next round/contest, and everyone pretty much agreed that a next round would be fun. Some even suggested a theme or idea for the next one too.

An idea, that probably wont work, is that the winning entry for each contest gets put into the same game, and the game would be eventually pretty cool, with sprites from all around the forum. I think it would be an epic game, but perhaps it wouldnt work.

Your choice dude. I think Pyrosaur mentioned he didn't own the first Portal, so you're free to give it to him if you want.

Also on a completely unrelated note, I also did more work on my unentered example entry. For anyone who actually cares, here it is:

Was just a small update, made the outline's colored and stuff. Stare at it until I think of a good category/theme for round 2.
