How do i add characters to the game in version 1.6? I forgot how...Thanks

You can't add characters to 1.6 (unless you mod it), you only can edit the sprites of the current character (Mario) of the game, which can be counted as a custom character, but you can only have one at a time. Also, SE custom characters are not compatible with 1.6 characters.

Can you show me a way how to by modding it?

There is a mod here that allows for custom characters in 1.6.

The download gives a 404 unfortunately, so unless somebody else has it, you wont be able to add custom characters to 1.6.

Alternative method (without "modding" it)

Make in your mari0 folder:
love/mari0/graphics/ [path to mario's files]
and this will override the player files
