You can make a custom character. Just put your sprites in, and name the folder the name of your character.
There are also quite a few downloadable characters and some built into the game.

THAT if he's using Mari0 SE (which he hasn't specified).
If you're using Mari0 1.6, you won't be able to do so. There are some mods that do it, or you can do it yourself by changing the source code of Mari0.
