How do you create mods?

Although I know how to program with LUA, I am not sure how to edit the source of Mari0. I have downloaded the source from stabyourself.net/mari0, but all I have is a .love file and a readme file. How do I access the source from the .love file? Or am I supposed to mod another way that does not require the source?
