Come on, it has to be done. Think of all the advantages!
Bigger levels (including more vertical space), more power ups, more variety of enemies and map types, slopes, flying with capes, running up walls, Yoshi, keys + warpzones, spin jump, being able to pick up turtle shells, etc.

That can lead to pretty insane puzzles with Portals, and even a possible versus mode between players.

Of course, it would take a while to make, but maybe we can start by changing textures at least? Or implementing 16 bit sprites in the game rather than 8?

implementing 16bit sprites ? this isn't the NES, you can change the graphics to the extent your graphics card allows.
Anyway yeah it would be a new game altogether.

Utterly useless and inaccurate post. If someone makes this using Mari0 as a base then it's still a mod, no matter how much is changed.

It's still a mod if you don't completely rewrite the entire game ;)
Leave one line of the original code in. BOOM. Mod.
But at least being able to grab turtle shells and throw them. I don't know what the code is when you pick up a companion cube, but I'm sure you could use something similar for the turtle shells.

Yeah, that's why I posted the thread in the modding section, Maurice isn't going to do it, so maybe someone else could?
