They do work, except you can't just put them in the game as they are.

Use an image editor to put them in to the Mari0 format: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2955

You don't need windows, which is why I simply said "image editor"

The tutorial just uses paint.net as an example, you can do it with pretty much every editing program as long as it supports transparency.
