So, a long time ago I had an idea to make a group mappack based off of this video:It was put on hold for SE, like most things at the time. Anyway, we're going to start again from scratch.
Here's the tileset we'll be starting with:
Image
Some Guidelines:
  • - Use the text tool to tell the player what the main flaw of the level is, aka the moral.
    - One level per thing not to do, not doing the crappiest level possible, but a level that clearly shows one flaw.
    - I might edit some levels, such as allowing to skip an entity spam level, but the basic idea of what you made will still be there. (I will not edit every level.)
    - I'll only be adding enemies/music/backgrounds if they're used in a level. Feel free to submit stuff for general use in the pack, but they won't be added until someone uses them.
    - Regarding regular tiles, those are hard to keep in check. Remaking your level is not out of the question, but I'll try to keep troubles at a minimum!
    - There was a common misconception last time that every level could be skipped, but this is not true. I'll be deciding if a level can be skipped or not.

We could probably use a list of level "themes":
-Abuse of glitch
-Glitched enemy
-Enemy that duplicate itself(Skippable, should be at a world's first level in case the player crash playing this)
-Horrible tileset/tile choice
-Horrible music
-Msispppelilgns
-Enemy spam
-Super meat boy level difficulty.
-Plagiarism
-Portal levels that are only empty mazes
-buttons/doors "puzzles"

Also "wrong theme for playstyle". Like a volcano mecha bowser castle that's super easy, or a portal level that's purely platforming.

This almost never happens, it's the opposite. It's mostly a peaceful overworld with enemy spam.

So this is kind of like expanding upon Jesus Man's mappack. It was appropriately made by him because the entire time I played it I couldn't stop saying "oh god" and then as it got worse I yelled "JESUS CHRIST!"
Or maybe not. That was just TOO terrible.

I like the idea behind THIS map, UNLIKE THAT MONSTROSITY
...

Here's some more theme ideas, even though Automatik's was really good and right along the lines of what I was thinking:
-Minecraft
-Sloppy long strands of pointless stuff
-Being able to bypass stuff because of portals

- Animation that don't work
- Invisible blocks everywhere
- Borked graphics (enemies without palette sets, unclear animated tiles, misshapen custom graphics)
- Too many rewards (including a 1-up that doesn't disappear when Mario collects it)
- Probability of getting stuck

I don't like the one per level thing
some of these would be better combined
ex:
Horrible tileset + horrible music

The one per level thing is so that the flaw is readily apparent and to emphasize why it ruins the level; If we did two at once it would only give half the terribleness of the two flaws.

My only question is if we're only giving suggestions or if we can actually develop the levels for this.

You can :P
Also, I just updated the tileset to include some water tiles.

I remember back then we did:
*Inconsistent difficulty (levels start hard then become easy)
*Lack of reset pipes in puzzle levels that require VERY precise planning.
*Out-of-place/misleading themes
*Forced Small Areas
*Forced Fire Areas (i.e. a wall of Hammer Bros you couldn't possibly dodge)
*Forced temp. invincibility abuse.
Super meat boy level difficulty.
I wouldn't take it that far. Probobly anything that goes overboard (ala Kaizo Mario, Syobon Action or IWBTG) due to traps everywhere and massive trial-and-error gameplay.

In regards to tiles, I think we could use these spikes:

I'm currently making progress on the "Glitch Abuse" map, and I'm already discovering quirks I didn't expect.
Also a suggestion for the description because why not;

We need to decide who makes the first level, otherwise it'll just be suggestions but no progress

Here is a kinda extended version of the tileset, with some new tiles.

Also, here is my first level for this group mappack:

Of course, only Turtley would post a tileset addition with only SMB tiles with opposite collision, then follow it up with an enrmy spam level...

Now now, let's try not to go wild with the tiles. I only did the spikes as the only spikes in vanilla SE are Portal-styled and only have up/down collisions.

How about inconsistent tile properties for a level (e.g. two blocks that look the same but one is a spike).

Yeah, let's cool down on the tileset. You shouldn't need a thousand tiles for 1 level.

No need to ask who does which level. Check if it wasn't already done, then just do it and post it!

the level:

Note that you should change the conditions so that it correspond to the right level.

It's in, but your animation doesn't really need world/level conditions, since people can just not use the same trigger id.

Oh, right, I forgot.
new version (I simply renamed "my_anim" to "anim_keys_doors"):

Code: Select all

I think plagarism should include stealing things without proper credit. Also I'm glad to help.

Plagiarism could be a O Brothers level(Since O brothers was a popular mappack), let's say the first level, with just a text added "This is totally not taken from o'brothers, and baf didn't make this at all".

You should ask Baf permission before doing this.

Also I don't like the idea of the map here, the entire premise feels like an excuse to make a bad map.
I think it would have been a better idea to do something along the lines of smw101, instead of making a sarcastic mappack and making it enjoyable on purpose.

But that's just me.

Or it could be 1-1 of SMB.

Actually, I agree. *gets called a hypocrite*
I was looking to see if there were similar videos to the one in the OP, turns out there is a lot. But I saw a video of that hack and thought it would probably be better to serve the purpose of the map, which is to help those who can't map well. If I could change the focus of the map to be like SMW 101, I would, but it's a million times more fun for us mapmakers to go the sarcastic route. Though I had an idea to mix the two by showing the level with the flaw, but instead of the flagpole there would be a pipe to the same level with the flaw fixed and texts changed to give tips rather than driving the point home. But of course with is harder to make and millions of people (not really) are contributing as it is now.

Also here's the video of the hack I watched just incase anyone else feels like watching it.

This sounds like a great idea. Honestly, I haven't been looking forward to playing a deliberate bad map.

Okay, have fun playing a half deliberate bad map (that's half bad half good if it wasn't clear)
EDIT: I still want to know if everyone likes this idea so I'm going to take a vote. So yeah send me a PM if you like the idea, don't if you don't.
