What are your opinions on worlds?

Let's lay down some facts.
- World comparison between games:
  • SMB: 8 worlds, 4 levels each world.
SMB2: 7 worlds, 3 levels each world, except the last which has only 2 levels.
SMB3: 8 worlds, 8 or more levels each world.
SMW: 7 worlds, 5 or more levels each world.
    SM64: 1 HUB world, 15 levels.
- In SMB3, they introduced world maps. This game also introduced world themes, which are used in all games afterwards.
- In Super Mario World, the world map became more open, and is the first game with a special world, another staple of the series.
- Mario games are often criticized for overusing the same world themes; Grass, desert, jungle, beach, snow, mountains, clouds, and bowser levels.
EDIT: Feel free to say other trivia about world maps and I'll add them.

What do you think about worlds? Should they be short like SMB or longer like in SMB3? Are world maps good? World themes?
Discuss!
(Not sure if this goes in mapping.) (If you're wondering why there's so many edits, I suck at wording things.)

what?
smb3 has 90 exits at most while smw has 96 exits [citation needed]
unless you mean map screen in which smw has 7
smw also introduced special worlds which is another staple of the series
(my point is smw in the best mario game other than yoshis island)
other than that I do think that the world themes should be more unique (and this applies to kirby too).

Oh my, it seems you're right. I was thinking about the main path when I said that.

The same goes on for Sunshine, Galaxy, and all the games...
Where does having only 8 worlds becoming a standard for Mario series come from?

In the "New" games, there are only 8 worlds.
Well if you don't include the special world, then there's 9 worlds.
