Let's lay down some facts.
- World comparison between games:
- SMB: 8 worlds, 4 levels each world.
SMB2: 7 worlds, 3 levels each world, except the last which has only 2 levels.
SMB3: 8 worlds, 8 or more levels each world.
SMW: 7 worlds, 5 or more levels each world.
SM64: 1 HUB world, 15 levels.
- In Super Mario World, the world map became more open, and is the first game with a special world, another staple of the series.
- Mario games are often criticized for overusing the same world themes; Grass, desert, jungle, beach, snow, mountains, clouds, and bowser levels.
EDIT: Feel free to say other trivia about world maps and I'll add them.
What do you think about worlds? Should they be short like SMB or longer like in SMB3? Are world maps good? World themes?

(Not sure if this goes in mapping.) (If you're wondering why there's so many edits, I suck at wording things.)
