But it doesnt seem overused because that seems like a perfectly fine shell puzzle level. Theme levels can exist and I dont see why that's a problem.

If we cannot adequately show what the problem is (apparently, overuse) then the level is pointless. And the description being just "shell puzzles" sounds like a "never do shell puzzles." and makes it worse.

"overusing a puzzle theme" maybe. "shell puzzles without reset pipes" totally.

Well, when people asked for a "classic" mode, Maurice didn't implement it.
Here, the difference is that you can also have a semi-functional portal-gun(shoot only blue/orange portal), which can serve for cool puzzles.

If you want to see how the overuse of shell puzzles can become problematic, just play 0'bros from the beginning of the second world. You're usually provided with one koopa to solve multiple puzzles, and it gets really insane with the fourth castle. By the seventh, you have to re-locate the Koopa Shells a lot with portals.

I'm thinking of taking the worst and most over-the-top levels 0'Bros has to offer in this category and putting them as optional sub-areas of 2-1.

If anyone wants an example of a bad maze, try 3-3 from Mario & Princess Peach. I'm also thinking there should be a level dedicated to glitch abusing. There's also the sheer number of problems that could be developed from the mappack Mario Exploration, like "INVISIBLE LEVELS/HIDDEN PATHS w/ PITFALLS" (3-4), "CHECKPOINTS IN (large) SUBLEVELS" (3-1), "STUCK IF BIG MARIO" (6-4), "TRAP WARPS TO PREVIOUS WORLDS" (also 6-4, try to enter the left or right ends of the escape pod instead of the center).

Whether or not a completely unportalable level is good or bad seems to be entirely based on preference to me. And SJB, then i'd say a more appropriate level name would be "overuse of a difficult puzzle element" because just naming the level shell puzzles is still bad.

Yea, "Overuse of a difficult puzzle element" is probably a better way to put it as.

EDIT: Tried your level. It's more of a level that's meant to be played by itself without any of the other levels, and you should add "If you want checkpoints in sub levels, add a small room on the main level connected to the sub level, so they work." The "C" checkpoint entity graphic should be a standard tile placable in the level, along with the entity in the same square to better illustrate this issue.

When you do get killed in the sub level, you're stuck indefinitely in the main level, dropping you to your death until you shut the game off.

I've been considering of adding in up to five sub levels from 0'Bros that will be placed in 2-1. For this to work, I need red-colored "Back" and "Next" pipe tip graphics, and an "End" block graphic like the "Skip" one.

Here are the candidates for worst shell puzzles in 0'Bros, besides what I have in now:

  2-3_1 (if you want to take the bottom exit)

  4-3_1 (not that bad, it's short, and you do get more than one Koopa to play with.)

8-2 from the same map pack could work for a "MEAN JUMPS" level.

As long as you update the different versions of the levels I fixed (making 1-4 skippable since it's evil difficulty-wise, same goes for 2-3), I'll make sure to remember using black text with the cyan overworld background.

You could make the back text white, then use that. I know you can read it during the day, but the white text was for underground / castle levels.

4-4 was good, but it felt a little too short for me, and in particular I didn't like the usage of the "crappy tiles". Then again this is an "How not to make a map pack", so I won't go too hard on it but maybe add in a tile with collision/invisible properties on so they act as one-way tiles you can't see so you have to swim around a "z" without dropping below the blank areas or return to a prior segment.

Anyone around here able to add more tiles so I can properly see the rest of the 0'Bros. levels (the 2-1 subrooms and 4-2) in this mappack?

5-1 should be maybe "Glitch Entities" where you combine two properties normally not intended to go together to get something... weird as they say. This only works if you tell the player(s) beforehand.

2-4 I think should read "unportable normal tiles" since it's camouflaging standard tiles to make then non-portable and almost impossible to tell apart from the normal portable tiles.

I'm sure there's a level we can snatch from Mario's Journey or Mario Exploration, since a lot of those levels are good examples on how not to make a map pack.
Oh, and if we need room for eight more levels, we can always do a World 9 and World 0, since those worlds you can create without modding.

EDIT:
5-3 could be "Untested Level(s)", where you can't win the level because just one tile is not placed on a pipe entry entity. I remember playing a level just like this in a mappack some time ago, but I don't recall which one. It had like a "glitch" sort of feeling to it with random tile placements, and it was an entrance to an underwater segment, but the bottom of the pipe, where the entity was placed on, consisted of a non-solid tile.

For those wondering, I have passed the Mean Jumps level several times; you have to charge up in an indefinite loop, launch it where the coins on the top left are marked, and then proceed to jump almost the instant you set foot on each ground. For the last jump, you have to stall it a bit before making the jump. It is possible, but it's quite hard to figure out when you have that high a speed, it's possible to remain traveling fast even w/o orange gel as long as you remain in the air as much as possible. Just like the cameos and shell puzzles, they can only work if done correctly, providing enough information and clues as to what has to be done, which Baf didn't really make it so when he created the level some time ago, since I didn't know you wouldn't come to a halt immediately when stepping on standard non-gel ground after building up. I did make the title of the level "Blind/Puzzle Jumps without Hints", not long after.
