Important notice:

I have made the difficult decision to cancel further work on this project. At 12 levels, and having had no progress since the SE port, Abstracta is as done as it's going to get. I am still very proud of the work that went into this mappack, and the levels that are here compose a solid experience. That said, the promise of 16 levels (and 16 more remixed levels) is too much, especially since I have moved on to other projects.

Thank you for playing! I hope you enjoy what's here.
I originally wrote:Abstracta

Abstracta is a mappack focused around graphical excellence, platforming, and memorable level design. It's the most professional of the mappacks I've made so far, as I'm focused on making sure everything is absolutely perfect, from the difficulty curve to the timing of each object that comes by.

Its design is its key feature. The blocks and backgrounds are solid NES colors only, but each has varying levels of transparency, giving the whole picture a blocky yet glassy look. The blocks are combined to make detailed levels with apples trees and hot air balloons, to name a couple of my favorite parts. Of course, you don't have to take my word for it, just look at the screenshots!

Any questions?

Q: I'm having a hard time telling which blocks are solid. Can you help?
A: The more translucent blocks aren't solid. The less translucent ones are. The completely solid blocks aren't portalable.

Q: Where'd you get the backgrounds?
A: The polka-dotted backgrounds in the far back came from Super Paper Mario, and were ripped by Retriever II (link to The Textures Resource). They were scaled down to fit within Mari0 standard (224 pixels tall). The other components of the backgrounds were made by hand, by myself, with lots of patience. Don't steal them or use them without permission.

Q: Speaking of which, can I use these tiles in my own mappack?
A: You may, no credit required. You need only give credit for the backgrounds.

Q: It's sometimes hard to tell if something is a block or part of the background...
A: If you can describe the exact nature of your problem, I can help you and/or fix it.

Plans:
There will be sixteen levels in this mappack, for a total of four worlds. Each level will have a different theme, with the exception of the castles at the end of each world (though each of those will have a different design).

After the four worlds are finished, the player will be placed in a "hard mode" of sorts, spanning Worlds 5 through 8. The levels will feature similar design, but will be tweaked for a much more difficult playthrough.

Version Notes:
v0.4 contains all of Worlds 1, 2, and 5.

Just tried out this thing, and damn, I'm very impressed. The style of it just works perfectly. If you do continue this, I would like seeing the brick blocks and the question blocks done in the same style of the rest of the tileset, just to see if they fit. But how it is now, it's fun and looks pretty awesome. Thumbs up from me for it.

Looks Great! If they where parallax, that'd be awesome!

The backgrounds do have parallax.
Also, haven't we had this situation before?

Amazing, both on tiles' style and level design, very simple yet very enjoyable, I really hope you add more levels.
The only part i dont really undertsand is that bunch of lightbridges in 1-1, it looks weird and useless, like you put it in there just for...no real reason actually.
Just a question:  is that 2-1 a secret level or just a leftover WIP level?

Looks great, seizure inducing, and a revamp of the acid pack. Can't wait to play it!

Both-ish. It's mostly work-in-progress, and I was hoping to get some opinions on the art style and such before working on the level design. It'll probably evolve several times before I finish it.

As for the light bridges (and I've gotten several comments about that, here and elsewhere)... Mari0 doesn't have water yet. I put the lightbridges as a replacement for the waterfall. It's a waterfall, you know.

...That's not really the point, but okay.

These look any good? I'm about to make another release of this mappack, and I wanted to see if there were any gripes about the design of these.

I agree too. Very original, it's sometimes confusing but not frustrating. It was really cool!

Thanks, guys! I'm glad you had fun. I'll update it again when I finish another world, but that may be some time from now.
For now, though, I suggest you open the editor and look at the fifth world...

Thanks for the psychedelicious ice cream idea Qcode!

It has been too long.

Abstracta has been updated to v0.4 and now has three full worlds. Grab it in the first post!

Finished porting Abstracta to SE! You can grab it in the first post. Unfortunately I don't have anything new... but I have plans! Development of the mappack will not shift to SE only - I'll try to update both concurrently. That does mean that the SE version won't be using any SE-exclusive features other than updated graphics (if I can find something good for the enemies...)

also lol triple post... I wish I knew what people think of the new levels...

I should've mentioned that I really like the new levels. They're just great, especially the sweets level.
Very nice job! :)
