Image This is something I had started working on back in August. As the title suggests, it's look based on the Windows 98 operation system. I thought it was a cool and unique idea (but after looking on YouTube, people had similar ideas for Super Mario World). Not many levels are completed, but I do plan on finishing this. Feel free to make your own levels and post them on here. Any help is welcome, but I might change some things in it if I feel it is needed. If you see anything that looks wrong to you, even if it's the smallest thing, please tell me. Don't base things off of screenshots though, they might be old or playing the game might explain what you see is wrong

You can download the levels to play alone on any version of Mari0, but you can also download a modification of Mari0 that includes more Windows 98 graphics, sound effects, and a few more interesting things. The levels themselves are no different in playability and the mod only adds more of a feel of the old operating system

Castle Levels (?-4) have been postponed until Mari0 SE comes out, due to needing a taller level

The Last Update Was on November 4th:
Includes finished levels 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, and 2-1
2-1 added in this update, includes some secrets
1UP mushrooms hidden in every finished level
Mod includes changed title and icon

ImageImageImage

Image
New introduction screen, replacing the Stabyourself.com one. I want to eventually readd the old one and have two, it's not right for me to move someone's rightful credits to making a game

Image
Image
Image
The title screen and some parts of 1-1

Image
Image
Some screens of 1-2, showing off the moving scroll bars. They need to be fixed, since the ends don't look right and there's only one color scheme for them

Image
Part of 1-3, that small rectangular block is a redesigned spring

Image
Placeholder for 1-4. The ?-4 levels will be tall levels with a width of 25, and must wait until SE

Image
The start of 2-1. Stilling working on it, so it might change

Here's the most recent tileset, linked because the image is very big

Probably the most original idea for a mappack. Good job.

I want to try making the scrollbars move by editing the normal moving platforms, but that's something I'll look into later, after I make more levels

Please continue this. A blue screen of death level would be funny.

Agreed, but maybe if you can find a tileset, you can make the evolvation of operating systems(Windows98,XP,7 etc...)

I actually thought about that, I was thinking either the last levels, or all castle levels. I started something relating to it earlier, but stopped for a while because I had to do each letter one by one (only the first line has been changed)

Image

Windows XP might be doable, but Vista on has all that Areo stuff so it's all transparent so it might be hard, plus Windows 95/98 are the only that fit Mario's style

EDIT: Image of finished Blue Screen

Can you possibly create a version that can run in any version of Mari0; mod or not?

All he'd have to do is make a tileset. Simple as that.

Yeah, I'll add a basic mappack version of it in a little bit, but some of the graphics will be different

Sorry about the delay, but the mappack is uploaded, with slightly changed level design

I'd say I'll have 1-2 (and maybe 1-3) done by today. I got the moving scrollbar working, but the left and right ends of the scrollbar don't look right

The scroll bars work perfectly, but they look wrong because since you can change the sizes of them, the image for it tiles, so you can't add ends to either side

Anyways, 1-2 and 1-3 are 99% completed and I'll update the main post when they are finalized and uploaded

Also, anyone know how I could add a second title screen? I replaced the stabyourself.net one with something else to try something and I liked it, but I don't want to take away the original screen since it isn't my game and anyone who worked on the game deserves to keep their credits intact

I do like the idea of that title screen, I did make one already, but it's sorta plain. Do you can if I use the idea for the title screen just change it alittle?

EDIT: Everything is updated! Tell me if you have any problems with anything

Oh by the way, handy fact: You can delete the menu and copyright text and they'll still appear layered over it.

I was thinking about doing something like the voice hack, but with Microsoft Sam instead. Not really sure how it'd work

And the text thing is weird, maybe it was put in to get it in place right, but he forgot to delete it later? And I think the copyright might just be from the image, because I replaced the logo with the original SMB one awhile ago and didn't remember seeing it over Nintendo

The reason new levels are coming together so slow is because I can't finish 1-4. I've had ideas for more levels, but I just can't think about the direction I want to go with the castle levels. I don't want to make the levels look like the normal Super Mario Bros. with the tiles from this project, but I don't want to totally just make another level that has no specific significance to the bosses in Mario games. Maybe I'm just looking into this much, though. Anyone have any ideas on how the ?-4 levels should look? I did have the idea to just have the level start straight off at Bowser, but sometimes Bowser is the easiest part of the levels and is just good timing when trying to beat him

I like your idea here have these shiny 1-4 and mod suggestions;
1-4 should be inside of a web browser.
• Text in the bg
• Images could have platforms in them.
• Corrupt images like chippy's avatar could be platforms.
• Bottom of the window could have a scrollbar with platforms on them maybe.
• At the end of the level, you break the X button (bricks) to get out of the browser, and you fight bowser on top of it.
Also for your mod you should resprite enemies into cusors.

Nice! You spelt stabyourself wrong though. I can't believe I haven't posted about this before.
Also an idea from when I was about 6 and heard about Neopets (yes I know, I was 6 then): millions of pop-up boxes. Break the X buttons to continue.

Go ahead! And to anyone else who wants to, feel free. I might change some things around though when it's actually added to the mappack. I just ask one thing:

Image
Do not make objects that look like the one above

Image
If you want a shape like that, do something like this

Image
Or less preferably, but doable, this

That last screen was a demonstration just to show how the windows should be drawn for those contributing to this map pack. It's not intended to be part of the final game.

What do you mean by "off the grid"? Not matching the 16x16 tiles? If that's what you're saying, I'm guessing you didn't actually play it, since it's a reskinned spring being pressed down

I've updated this thread post with more information and some updated screen shots, along with some posts since I changed the original URLs. Can't do anything about anyone elses posts with replies to the old image URLs. I've been working on some things, nothing new has been uploaded yet, but I want to get things done as soon as I can. As with other people, the wait for Mari0 SE sort of holds things back. I want to add platform types of things, but I don't want to use Turtle's mod to do it (I really like the mod, I just don't want to force people to use a mod). Like I said earlier, and now in the main post, go ahead and make your own levels if you want, more help is better!

I don't know what gj means, so I don't know how to respond to that.

I also noticed I was being stupid when cavejohnson99 said I mispelt stabyourself. I barely looked it over and thought i just misplaced a tile, but I actually put stabyourselfself

EDIT: All "castle" levels have been postponed until SE, they will be tall, get to the top, sort of levels that will lead to a boss fight. Here's a new-ish image, Bowser is just there for no reason, just felt like putting him there. The pipe finishes the game, since there isn't a normal way to beat it. I'll have an updated level and mod download soon, I'll update the thread title when it's up

Turret Opera said I should resprite the enemies, too, but I think I'm just going to keep the original ones with the edited colors. I'm not an A+ spriter, and I have no clue how I would make a trojan horse or enemies into cursors to fit their behaviors. I did have an idea to change Bowser to that annoying paperclip from that "helps" you in things like Microsoft Word, but I gave that up long ago

Lakitu would be cool resprited as a curser like it's clicking or something. Either way you don't have to.
Also here's that sprite.
