anyway I kinda wanted this map to be a mario themed not mario and portal themed.
so I'll add in the rules you wanted sjb, and say "no portal levels please"

Looking deeper into it, I've decided I'm not really comfortable with putting in puzzle-based levels since they'd be difficult to make follow the eight themes as well as a suitable difficulty. Plus, a level should be beatable by both Small Mario and Big Mario.
That's alright, is was pre/beta/or demo release because I wasn't entirely sure what you were really looking for anyway. If you want, you can keep it and do whatever with it in some other mappack if you want. I don't really want the level for anything anyways.

I'll start working on a more suitable level. Hop my next one comes out a lot better.

use fraps , it's the best on windows 7, unless u don't have win 7 . use weecam

Well here's my 2nd attempt. This one (again) has no custom tiles YET or appears to be following any specific theme, but it will with some modifying/editing. It is only a pre/beta/demo/test (or however you want to say it) level, so some modifying/editing would be needed of course. That's all if it gets the o.k. So look it over, test it out (what ever) & see what you think.

Personally, IMHO, I think the trailer is a bit to simple. Maybe put in some zooms where mario does something epic (Jump something, land it and do some portal MLGness [<-- Is that a word?]). It's your trailer. You can do what you want. Im just posting what I would've done. Epic music btw. =)

Can't wait till it's done.

Q mark, just going to tell you, it is really hard to visualize something without a good tileset.
I once made a mappack with a few levels, but the tiles were just for practical use, it really took away.

Make a final map. That's all you need...


EDIT: Renhoek, PLEASE update the first post to say which levels have been done. I will try to make one, but I really want to see that on the first post...

Well since I can't really tell just how hard/easy the levels I create are, I'm not going to bother with custom tiles just to find out it might be to easy/hard to be in that world. Is it world 2 hard, world 7 hard, Etc. To me all "my" levels seem world 1 hard. I'm hoping you might be able to tell me so I can design it right.

Honestly I don't think it's gonna pick up any major activity until SE is released. Most of the mapping forums have been like this recently really.

Ok, I'M BACK!
I can continue to do anything that is needed, also can I do a level like 4-1 or 7-1 and not a sub level because I wanna do more than just mod.

Also when SE is released I'll make a "Space block" that, if placed will make mario jump higher and fall slower and other stuff in space.

We pretty much need levels at this point. Almost all of World 1 is done (Just need a castle level, but I think either SJB or Renhoek are tackling that), and we got one level in World 2. So make some levels, and keep them to the theme of the world you want it in.

Just some tips:
-Make it so it'd look like it'd be in a normal Mario game. IE no impossible jumps (with or without the portal gun), no stupid invisible block traps, etc.
-Don't make the levels too puzzle oriented. To my knowledge, this mappack's feel is Mario-based, so try making it stay with that feel. Go ahead and use a button-based puzzle if needed, but don't make the level require 12 companion cubes, a laser, and 21 doors needed to be open just to reach a pipe.
-Remember to make the difficulty match the world you're making a level for. World 2 should be an easier level, while world 7 should add a bit of difficulty. But don't make it impossible.

Other than that, just make the level fun and good luck with your level making.
These tips go for everyone who wants to make levels.

anyway I think sjb's focussing on his A0zora map/mod and I really don't see how 1-4 should look so I need sjb to come up with an idea since the city theme was his idea. (maybe something like an abandon ware house or something?)

I was thinking 1-4 could be like the city jail. It's towards the end of the city world, and in some sense jails are scary. Dull and grey, it kinda fits an end-of-city world well. If you're okay with it, I'll tackle 1-4.
And no offense Turret, but the level you submitted as 4-1/1-4/whatever it was, I remember playing it and not being able to finish it. I also remember it being, to put it bluntly, bad. You might wanna work on it, or try making a new level altogether.

It's okay. I'm used to making levels that are twenty seconds long (if ya know what I mean) so the full-fledged level thing was a little stressing.
Just an idea, but maybe make the main entrance guarded by 'policeturtles', kinda like enemy spam, so you have to find another way in.

well I've played through and it seems pretty okay,
but that portal puzzle in the third room's a bit too easy for a puzzle,
and lastly the first room is fine except for two things,
the theme of it doesn't really match a city theme, maybe have buildings in the beggining part and have the buildings get smaller and smaller as you go on?
and the wall for the prison can easily be jumped over,

but besides that I thought the level was good.
it took me a few moments to realise that the enemies in the small chambers were prisoners :P

everything was okay, those clouds give the beginning a totally different vibe,

though I still had the problem with the prison wall being jumped over in the first room,
puzzle's a lot better (didn't see the point of the bridge on the right :P)
but I'm not to sure about there being hammer bros in world 1.

The 3 bridges in Mario's cell makes you use the portal gun more than once, just because it's supposed to be complicated to "break out" in a sense. For that good old Jail feel :P
The clouds do help, as do the building colors IMO. Helps give the "Setting sun" feeling, so it makes the first 3 levels look like it took all day for Mario.
As for the wall being able to be jumped over, I really can't fix that. I had to put the wall there so the player can go in the "door", and I don't want the player to go down the door using a down pipe. So I'm kinda SOL there.
Also, I used the Hammer Bros. because they feel like the perfect jail guards, but I can change them to other enemies if you really want.
But glad you liked the level anyway.

I'll just cover the back side of the wall with solid tiles, so it doesn't feel like a thin invisible wall.

Tested 1-4; Yep, she's qualified for entry. However I think some firebars should be added (not really in areas where they're difficult to avoid, since it's only the first castle level), the pipe at the end of 1-4_2 is not connected properly, and the "Fire Start" entity which causes Bowser to shoot his flames is missing.

Otherwise I certainly enjoyed it. C:

I went through the level and fixed the pipe and the fire breath but I didn't add fire bars when I was testing.

Just make sure to read the rules on the first page, keep to the world theme you're gonna make a level for, and use only the tileset that is provided on the first page. Other than that, give it your best shot and post the levels and any bg images you make as the rules explain. And have fun too.

There's been one group mappack before. It was, but it was a lot of the work, but the organizer tried hard, but everything was really thrown together when it came to the tileset, there were no themes, and he was kind of lazy when it came to fixing errors...
he eventually went to help us out in our project, we made him a team member be he resigned so now we- wait... Bob why are you talking in third person? (also happy new year everybody (for me at least since time zones))

Did I really resign? I remember resigning from being a leader, but not from being a level designer...

It's only on hold for the customization abilities of SE, not the core level design. The main things we're waiting for are custom characters and maybe a custom block or two. If you want to make a level, go ahead. Just keep the guidelines in mind while you're making it, and feel free to post it here when you finish it.
We'll make changes to the levels as they are needed when SE comes out but feel free to make levels right now if you want to give it a shot.
