good rip but I'd suggest ripping the level terrain as these don't really have much use...

Well, just making custom tiles over the defaults is a good way to start. In this other game Teeworlds, there is a level editor that uses images and tiles them. I copied (after resizing them to 64 x 64) the SMB tiles over the defaults.
