New Super Mario World (v1.0)

It's been too long.

New Super Mario World is the result of a sixteen-month-long development cycle - that's right, I've been working on it (off and on) pretty much since Mari0 was released. It aims to be a different kind of mappack, one that caters not to the Mario side or the Portal side, but to both in equal measure. It is suited for the experienced player, so it is not recommended that you download this as your first mappack.

There are sixty levels in this mappack. How, you ask? Almost every level has an extra level hidden somewhere within. Each is separated by an intermission, so when Mario starts moving on his own, you know you've found it. Even though the levels are well hidden, finding them is not the tricky part; completing them while under the same time constraints as the previous level is where things get difficult. But if you die in one of these X levels, don't worry - you'll start back at its beginning.

There are two ways to play this mappack. There is the normal version, which offers all sixty levels and the standard difficulty level. Also available is Rush mode, which reduces the time limit to 100 in-game seconds, but lightens the difficulty level in some areas so that you can breeze through as quickly as possible. Rush mode does not include X levels, since the strict time limit does not allow for completing both levels. (I might add a few as DLC worlds 9 and 10 if I get enough requests.) While Rush mode may have a lower difficulty in each level, the time limit actually raises the difficulty well above that of the normal version in some areas - choose wisely, or perhaps get both and see which you like better.

Screenshots - because you can't get downloads without 'em.

Version 1.0 Notes
There are so many changes since the last version that I can't cover them all! I'll put the most relevant ones here:
  • I now have every level completed. That should be obvious, though.
  • 1-3 has been relegated to an X level and replaced with a proper underwater level.
  • A lot of levels have had difficulty/design improvements. These include 1-2, 1-4, 2-4, 3-3, 3-4, 6-1, 6-3, and a few others I can't think of right now.
  • A lot of X levels have been moved, removed, or replaced. I don't have a list, I just know there's quite a few.

This is looking really nice. I love how the 8bit Mario and portal graphics sit in with the DS graphics, and your level design is really interesting.

I like that first part with the lasers that turn themselves on and off in 1-2. How exactly did you make it so that it follows that pattern? I'm having a hard time figuring out the links connections and and what goes where... and the direction they're going in. I tried looking at it myself and I've tried remaking it, but it's just too difficult. Mind explaining?

Also, your mappack so far is pretty epic. Keep it up!

It's the only laser pattern I've figured out myself; set 3 lasers, not gates, timers, and laser switches up, then connect in the following pattern: laser - timer - not gate - NEXT switch. Make sure each laser is pointing to a different switch. For some reason, it doesn't work with two or four lasers.

By the way guys, play this with the HQ2X shader. It's really nice.

i need to say you all ways go into something new on your 5 levels. now in the 1st 4 i like it but then you have the ice world why is that and i have to say if you made a 2-2 it will have nothing to do with ice and the 1st world at least the 1st level needs to be more like the ds new super Mario BROS 1st level or new super Mario bros Wii level. now if you make it so people can make portals on any thing then you can make a Mario game the way it needs to be or make the levels as if you cant make portals i think more people like it then.

and the 1st world at least the 1st level needs to be more like the ds new super Mario BROS 1st level or new super Mario bros Wii level. That's not the point. This is a Mari0 game, not a Mario game. There is now a difference. I don't want to sound mean, just explain my reasoning.

Why would we get this game just to play NSMB. There's a way to do that already. It's called NSMB.

If you mean my mappack then either you've had a bad time with the NEW series or I need to rename it.
If you mean the idea previously encountered in your post then I agree.

The more I play this pack, the more I like it. Apart from the annoying underwater pipe bit, it's a really great pack.

It would be nice if there was some indication, like some pipes going GRYRG with Y being the peak of the little pyramid and that one being the way out. Otherwise it's just 'guess the right pipe gee isn't this fun' when it isn't, it's just tedious.

World 2 is on a good run. The opening of 2-3 should make you guys very happy.
Remember, for when I post the download, NOT to press anything at that time.

So.
Let me get this straight.
For something that is five levels long I get 57 downloads and all this praise?
I don't feel like this is very fair. It's hardly a tech demo in my terms. ONE full world, a world teaser, and a hardly implemented extra level.

So I'm going to fix that now. You now may download New Super Mario World v0.2.

http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?aewvdwxwwjhsm8r
The update includes:
World 1
World 2
World 1-1x
World 1-2x
World 1-4x
And something that needs its own caption: World 2-3.
2-3 was made while my head was ringing with all of your praise. It is my thanks for your support. You WILL have fun with it. (vaguely commanding)
Thank you for all of your comments, and good luck!

For those of you who haven't seen them yet, the "extra" levels are being made to be special. They'll range anywhere from creative to frustrating and easy to hard, but at least they'll all be fun. An intermission separates them from the other level, so you'll know when you find it.
And the difficulty curve... um.

Basically, just don't expect a lot of response when you do anything on this forum. People don't respond or download a lot of maps because they're lazy and dumb. It's also a hassle to have to go comment on the thing in a separate window after you've been playing the thing in your Mari0 window and have probably gone somewhere else already on your internet window.

Also, I think this is awesome.

In 2-4, that bit with the single ice blocks and the podobos everywhere is so annoying. I edited it to make it easier because it was really irritating me.
Also, you may want to increase the amount of lives, because this map-pack isn't nearly as easy as the original Super Mario Bros.
Other than that though, it's a very good pack.

The point is "Look at all of this praise!" not "Y U NO REPLY".

Go find the lives. I added plenty.
As for the castle, yeah, that's being changed VERY soon. If I made 2-3 for the fans, I (unknowingly) made 2-4 because I hate the fans. Or something.

VERY soon being right now.

I also included 3-1 for your enjoyment. My friends' comments range from "That's really cool" to "That's really overkill."
I really need comments on this one because it affects a lot of the rest of that world.
Speaking of comments, how are you guys liking the x levels (1-1x, 1-2x, 1-4x)? I haven't heard a thing about them yet.

You have me convinced. I will not release world 3 today. The other reason is the lack of response (yes, I know that it's been 15 minutes, but who cares, I need another excuse).

ANYWAY

Another numbers recap:
v0.1 - 57 downloads and lots of comments
v0.2.1 - 68 downloads and few comments

Okay.

Well, to fix the problem THIS time, here's half of the mappack for you - New Super Mario World v0.4.
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?1fvs6n3we7c34wc

Description is at the top.
Also, I would like a little feedback. You don't have to do this, but it would be nice:
What was your favorite level and why?
What was your least favorite level and why?
How are the x levels? Did you find any? What was the experience like?

Good luck with the mappack, and thanks for all of your support!

Would you believe I was expecting to put nested mazes in 4-2?

Besides, I thought that I made them... slightly obvious...

How is 4-2's last maze at all obvious? It's basically 'jump to every available location until the level ends'.

Oh, and since this is coming out incredibly negative, I did love the rest of world 4.

Also, sorry...

Just a heads up: I'm taking a break from this project to work on some other things. I'll probably get back to it in a week or two, but I may make some minor edits. Keep the comments coming, though, as they will influence the designs of the other projects.
