Stabyourself.net Forums Game Jam 2014

So I suggested in the chat room that we have a game jam, and everyone seemed to really like that idea.
The jam ran from 12:00 PM (Midnight) Central Time on Saturday, October 11th to 11:59 PM Central Time on Sunday, October 12th.
This will gave participants 48 hours to create a functioning game.

You may use whatever programming language or game-creating program you want.

NAQ (Never Asked Questions):
How do I join?
You don't! The jam's over.
What's happening right now?
Just look right below to see the jam's current state:

Current Stage of Jam:

Well, neither frogs nor bread & butter won.
Also, if Halloween was a choice, then it would've almost certainly won.
I wanted all the options to have a fair shot.

I'm afraid I won't have time to participate on this jam, since (SURPRISE!) my PC stopped working again. But, as common as it might sound, this time it wasn't because it is a bad PC, but because I've had problems with energy, as I said before in the Steam chat.
Also, even though I said I was going to participate, you didn't add my name. That's racist >:( (jk)

I don't mean to sound cruel but you really could have managed this better. (I had plans this weekend and you started it without warning)

But I was able to make something in time.

Sorry about it being so sudden. If there's another one, I'll be sure to give lots of time in advance.
The game looks interesting. I'll have to play it.
Also, you do know that you still have all day tomorrow to work on it, right?

Ok, I guess I have "finished" my game. I call it "Sudden Youth". It's could be made better, but at least I submitted within the times.
Arrow-keys/WASD/ZQSD to control the character, Press R if You're stuck.

You have to pull people over for speeding. Due to anti-discrimination laws you have to have an equal number of people of each 'colour' on your arrest sheet.
A - skip, D - Stop or you could just click the buttons.

I finished my game and like everyone, I had to cut out many features but I like how the game turned out.
Anyway, here it is, Ball Factory PANIC.
INSTUCTIONS:
The goal is to keep the colored balls from falling into the holes by placing arrows that redirect their paths.
The twist is that the arrows will only work if they're the same color as the ball. Oh and you can't spam arrows because you have a limited amount and they disappear.
Like the name says, you will panic.

Controls:
Use mouse to place arrows
Use scroll wheel, buttons on the sidebar, or the number keys to change arrow color
Use right mouse button or arrow keys (including wasd) to select arrow directions
https://www.dropbox.com/s/gd3m52rakpxig ... .love?dl=0 (Use LÖVE 0.9.0)

Music from Vectorman and by Jon Holland

EDIT: Mute button changed to 0 and graphics updated a bit.

It has two levels. I barely had a lot of time to make them today due to work from 12pm-5pm. Ah well, I hope you guys enjoy it regardless that it's so short (and I probably could have reworked the graphics a bit.. but again, barely had the time). Anyway, I'm happy with how it turned out!

You're being experimented on with a new ability to shoot colors from .. thin air/your mind/etc. Basically you can't touch surfaces using your feet that are not the color of your shirt. If you do, you have to restart the level. You pass through Color Gates in order to change colors, and left click shoots the current color. A and D to move left/right and S to duck. W to enter elevators.

Also, use Love 0.9.1 (or 0.9.0) > http://love2d.org/

Another thing: Huge thanks to Mari0Maker for helping me find sprites for the player, sounds from bfxr, and overall putting up with me. Hans, Jeviny, and Chase also get credit for helping me with feedback on tiles, etc

Hey, is there a bug in the second level? I'm trying to jump on the first floating block and it's not letting me. There's like an invisible wall.

It's actually that you have to duck and move to the left to get on top of it. I didn't mean for that to happen, but there was no time to fix it otherwise :|

Welcome to Idiot's review corner! This time I'm quickly reviewing both the entries and also the contest in general. I do not mean to offend anyone in this review but I will be giving my honest opinions. So without further ado...

Game Reviews!
-if there's not a proper title for the game I'm making a terrible one up on the spot-
MagicPillow-Color Quest
Your game was broken. Not "I couldn't run it" broken, but "you left a second exit right next to the player" broken. I couldn't play the levels other than the final due to that. The use of color was neat though, with every color you get made it appear in the next map. But overall, since I couldn't play most of it, it kinda falls flat. (I tried all downloads that I saw.)
TL;DR Good concept gets broken by a simple mistake.

Renhoek- Deep Colo
This game was fun for a good bit. The color theme was great here: If your color matches enemy on contact, they dead. If not, you dead.
However I find the punishment for dying way too harsh. Having to redo a level for dying is a real pain, especially if you just passed a real hard level, only to have it done again. But other than that it's great, and feels the most complete since there's more than 2 levels.
TL;DR Great concept but harsh death penalty. Most complete game with many levels.

Turtle - Color Splatter
I enjoy the gimmick here. It could make for an interesting game if you expanded on it. But being only 2 levels it really hurts you. It doesn't help that one of the levels is just "ohey you're here go in elevator". Also the sprites are dumb and obv. Mario edits and that jump in the second room should have seriously been fixed. (I know you said you ran out of time but it's a serious glare.)
TL;DR Great gimmick but no chance to explore it due to 1 real level. Dumb sprites.

Mr.Q.Marx - Racial Highway
Gonna be blunt. I did not like this. I didn't get it at first, and once I did it was just boring and monotonous to play. I decided to spam the "stop" button and my results were 200 white guys to 23 of all the other races combined. With those kind of odds to get one race over all the others you'll be clicking "skip" a lot and in my case I passed by a lot of other races without noticing. On paper it may have been a good idea but in execution.... it's not fun
TL;DR Boring game. Sorry.

Alesan - Ball Factory Panic
This immediately reminded me of Chu-Chu Rocket. I liked the idea of this game, and playing it was equally as fun. But it's controls ruin the game for me, mainly the color switching. Mousewheel can be too imprecise and buttons on left make you waste time. Could never get past red color because of this issue because I was paying attention too much to what color I was trying to pick and not the balls.
If more work was put into refining controls and color picking it'd be a neat puzzle game.
TL;DR Great idea and fun gameplay but controls really mess it up.

Automatik - Sudden Youth
This game's gimmick is neat. Even though it only uses 2 main colors for the player states, it matches the theme well since both are vastly different. The only things I can complain about are that the "youth" character stops after she lands a jump which felt odd at first, and that there weren't enough levels to get a full experience.
TL;DR Great concept but lack of levels doesn't give a good experience.
As for the contest overall, it was a trainwreck. Please do not take this personally MagicPillow, but for our first Game Jam this could have been done so much better.
To give a nice list...
1/ The theme could have been so much better. "Color" is vague, and I know more interesting ones were suggested.... mostly by Jorichi.
Hell, even the obvious "halloween" theme would have been better. At least there's tons of potential for creative spooky stuff.
2/ It was all handled rather suddenly. I barely saw any announcement that voting was done and that the thing ended. You kind of need these things to be nice and flashy so people know.
3/ For our first jam it should've been 24 hours longer. Many of these entries felt like they didn't have enough time.
4/ If you run the contest don't enter it. This is just my opinion and I may break this rule in the future, but if you run it really don't plan on participating. If you do want to participate make sure their's a second person you can rely on handling voting and whatnot. Speaking of which...
5/ Don't use strawpoll. It's broken. You could vote many times and it'd count all of them. I've seen it happen in the past. A lot. Keep voting to PM's or find a reliable online poll program.
I may just steal this idea from you and run another one later, since I've done contests in the past with great reception. I love this idea and we've seen great ideas this time, but it needs to be run so much better.

I should mention that in my game you can also change colors with the number keys ("1" was the mute key in older versions though) but it really doesn't matter now.
Anyway if we do have another game jam then idiot should handle it, unless MagicPillow can do better next time.

Idiot kinda summed up my opinions on the games and contest, so I have no reason to do a review as well.

As for the next jam though; I think it'd be nice to involve more people into it.
So I thought it'd be nice to combine the sprite-contest idea with this Jam.
You can break it down into two rounds: Round one is where the spriters make as many tiles, characters and enemies as they can for the given theme and gametype. When that round is over all the sprites will be thrown on one big pile and in round two the coders will create games with the sprites of their choice.
Or you could have people team up (preferably randomly selected), though this would require equal amounts of spriters and programmers. But results will most likely be better.

I prefer that first suggestion, where it's 2 rounds with both contests merged into 1 myself. Sounds more challenging making a game out of sprites that you haven't seen until a few moments before it starts.

It's fine that you think it's boring. I also think it's boring.
I just wanted to try something new and sometimes new ideas are ones people haven't released because they're terrible and boring.
I sort of wanted to show that yeah it was difficult to police races evenly when the divide isn't even. That's why the percentage chance is based on the UK census.
It's a game though and as a game it kinda sucks.

So I don't know how the whole instant-win thing could've slipped past my radar.
I made a patched version if you want to play it the right way.
Since the jam is technically over, I made the download separate.
You can download it here, in the main post, or not at all. Your choice.

I like Turtle's game the most. Even though it only has two levels, I would love to see that game as a whole with more colors. My only complaints are that it's VERY short and that the player sprite looks like a recolored Mario sprite. But it's pretty neat for something made in two days.

I couldn't be active on the forum at the time, so I missed the jam. Will there be another one eventually?
