So this is a platformer game that I made, it's my first real game. The art isn't great, but I hope you guys can still appreciate it for what it is. It's got 50 levels. Elements in the game include powerups, spikes, teleporters, and lasers. Also up to 4 player multiplayer. I'm horrible at describing this game so I'm just going to cut to the screenshots.

A power up floating by in the first level

(You start out with three lives, even though I only have two)

After getting the powerup

Placing the block down (can be used to save yourself from death, obviously)

A little bad guy

Teleporting

The boss (he throws blocks)

I made this with two friends from school who did art and music, however they wouldn't want their names posted on the internet.

There is a way you can get into a level editor through code, but we didn't release it with the game as no one would want to make levels for it anyway and it's incredibly basic, unlike Mari0's.
Have fun, leave criticism (I know he doesn't have varying jump height, I couldn't get it right for some reason) and feel free to examine my somewhat crappy code!

Edit: I'd thought I'd leave the different worlds here for you all to see, and the main feature in them

Code: Select all

World 1: Overworld (Basic parts of game)
World 2: Desert (Glass, lots of teleporters)
World 3: Cave (Downwards spike, baddies in harder places)
World 4: Ice (Ice :P)
World 5: First 4 worlds "reprise" (Nothing new, it's just a bit of a milestone
World 6: Grass/Water (Water)
World 7: Techno (Laser shooters)
World 8: Maze (Vertical map height)
World 9: Moon (Lower gravity)
World 10: Boss world ("reprise" of first 9 levels + awesome boss fight)

This really isn't that bad. Criticism would mainly be about the few glitches, like picking up the powerup cancelling all momentum, and some design choices were odd (black hair on a black background? Really?), but overall, the game was fun, of what I played. The powerup idea is, as far as I know, a unique one, and an interesting one. The music is nice, it grows on you as you play (although the world one levels are a bit to short to really get into the music) and the art style has its own charm.

I noticed that while making a windows executable. It doesn't block momentum on my mac, but I didn't really test it too much on windows. I just assumed it was a singular computer thing.

Thanks for all the nice comments! The levels do get longer, and there's different music for each world. Levels before level 25 are 75-150 blocks long. After that increases to 200-250.

I really like this game! In fact for a simple little game, I really hope you expand and continue on this!

Great game!
I wish player moved faster along with gameplay...

Collision is terrible! (at least on windows)
You lose all momentum and random places and can't walk left or right sometimes...

You should defintely pick up free sprites somewhere, yours make the game boring to play.
Also, the bosses are repetitive and pretty easy (though sometimes they throw blocks at the wrong time and you have to start all over)

I love your game though!

Made a sucking icon because I have OCD and hate the dull .love picture! I'll put up a sucky download! http://www.mediafire.com/?5t58wc73wnb1w0h
EDIT: No, I did not put any effort into the picture.
EDIT No.2: It now downloads just the ICNS so you need to manually install it, Sorry.

Quite what method did you use to give it an icon? I very much still see it as the standard .love picture.

I quite enjoyed the game, though I haven't finished it yet. I had a few problems with it though.
Like Bob said, you lose momentum randomly while just walking. It throws off jumps too.
A severe lack of background during the first two worlds irks me.
Also the teleporters are too dang slow! Speed them up or make them instantaneous, and take away it's music! It doesn't need fanfare everytime.
Also needs more hats.
Other than that stuff it was a fun game.

Really? Hmn Odd. Do you use a windows computer? It may be because I'm a mac. Here lemme try... Weird, Why Don't I just upload the plain old Icon and people can manually install it, I'll edit the link.

I've run into the whole stopping momentum thing, but I didn't run into it much. Happened to me maybe once per 2 or 3 levels. I actually came up with a fix for this a while ago, I wrote a new collision system. It completely screwed up the boss fight though, so I decided to leave it out. Here's the icns game for the file that was used in the binary I made. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/80409786/Love.icns

I know they're not great, but they're not that bad that they make the game unpleasant.

There's no background in any part of the game. Sorry, my friend barely did any art for the game, but he wanted to be credited anyway.

Got a 404
And camwel, I made the icon but it seriously didn't work, manually installing an icon shouldn't be to hard.

Dropbox link doesn't work.
The game isn't unpleasant to play, but with no graphics, and playing one player, it gets kind of boring.
It is kind of sore on my eyes after a while.

What do you mean he wanted to be credited? You said they wouldn't want to be credited...

For some reason dropbox took forever to upload a 72 kb file...
This is a separate version. We've been giving some out to some friends, and our school said they might use it somewhere. He wanted credit on their, but didn't want his name on the internet.

.icns and .ico files are what are used by applications and executables. That's what LOK made and so I replied with the one I used in the application and executable I made.

That's the point. The sprite is what I used for the executable icon.

For the mouse over effects, do you use custom scissors, or .gif's?

When you mouse over the words in the main menu? I just draw a gray rectangle behind the words. See flashybutton in gui.lua
