Yes. You add them to your tileset. The example I showed is like a enlarged brick tile with all properties. (Of course, only put the properties you need)

i found the most annoying error, if you edit a level text file in any way (even if you revert to the old changes) the level you edited crashes upon load, even deleting the file and recreating the level doesnt fix this error I bet it's just because your text editor don't support unicode, so it won't...

Disable "use the mouse" (It should be off by default anyway)
Select "AIMX", press enter, then press the stick to the right

Well the mod api is a big thing, and they need to clean-up minecraft's code (since it's game-jam quality code). They added resources packs, customisable world generation, stuff like that because the re-factorisation process allowed that.

Well, the editor crash a lot, and there is that very annoying bug where you can click on the buttons to change level even when they are hidden.
And yeah, if you can run the game, you shouldn't have any problem creating characters, backgrounds, etc.
