Two things, Yes the sprite could use some work, perhaps even reduced colours... You could try for the NES pallet for it.

Think the Coloured blocks in Mario 3... Collision from the top, pass through on the bottom...

Wouldn't support Portals, and would give a LOT of creative freedom to the game.

It just ocurd to me. there's no checkpoints in smb3 so you can make a second level in the level's submaps and put a checkpoint there so you can put two levels into 1 level. or a simpler way of saying have all levels of smb3 world 1 into smb in just one world... Open Notepad, Hold down Right and Left shift and type "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" The less letters you have the more deadzones your keyboard has.

I don't know why but I had so much trouble with 8-2... If you're blocked by the beginning, it's because the window is larger so enemies spawn too early for you to get past them on the stairs, and bloopers don't fall into the hole in the stairs like they should. I noticed that like an hour before RC...
