I added a transcript incase it wasn't playable. Here's some more things to help troubleshoot the issue: Are you sure the tiles.png is in the correct mappack folder? Is the file named "tiles.png.png"? I don't see why it wont let you use them; could you describe in more detail what the problem is? Are you sure they're in the folder of the mappack you want them in? Maybe try using a known working tileset like this one ? Also, your tiles are the wrong dimensions, each tile should be 17x17px, not 18x...

You don't need an image editor to add custom tiles to your mappack. Just put the tileset in the mappack folder that you would like to add them to, and rename the image to tiles.png If you don't have file extensions enabled just make the filename "tiles" and check if it's a PNG beforehand, otherwise ...

You need to edit the config.txt file to give it the correct offsets and sprite sizes. It will work a lot better than using Mario's config.txt.
You might have to edit the spritesheet if you do this too.

You can't use base=goomba and leave it blank as the code because the sprites for waddle dee have multiple frames, and goombas only use one frame that's mirrored + a death frame.

JohnHOne is doing it correctly, even if it could use a little optimization.

Yes. If you have file extensions enabled to be shown on your OS, you can just change the .txt extension to .json.

The other method is when your saving the .txt file, change the extension to .json and make Save as type: set to All Files, like so:

I don't think that matters, as far as I know. If it's like a dialog box that has the option to Ignore and just create the .zip, I would do that. To do that, go to Options, Skins, and when the character name is highlighted, just use the left/right arrow keys to select your character of choice.

Local multiplayer doesn't work in the Mari0: SE beta.
If you want to play local multiplayer, just use 1.6 instead.

You can get the default controls back by opening up Mari0, going to Options, Misc., and then press enter when RESET ALL SETTINGS is highlighted. The controls will then be good as new!

I was getting this error a few days ago myself.
Open up your application data (get to that by pressing Start, and typing in "%appdata%" without the quotes), go to Roaming, LOVE, mari0_se, and delete the options.txt. Then, just reboot the game.

There is a mod here that allows for custom characters in 1.6.

The download gives a 404 unfortunately, so unless somebody else has it, you wont be able to add custom characters to 1.6.
